I would argue that the act of plugging an EV into a charger isn’t particularly difficult or time-consuming, but Porsche thinks even that small daily ritual can be eliminated. Its solution takes a familiar feature from smartphones and scales it up enough to charge an entire electric SUV.
Porsche first previewed its inductive charging technology in 2025, promising that owners would eventually be able to replenish their batteries simply by parking in the right spot. The Cayenne Electric was subsequently confirmed as the first production model designed to support it.
The hardware wasn’t available when orders for the electric SUV initially opened, leaving buyers waiting for one of its more unusual features. That wait is now over.
Porsche Wireless Charging is officially available to order in Germany and other European markets for the Cayenne Electric. Porsche says the technology will gradually roll out to additional markets around the world.
Just Park And It Starts Charging
The system works using two primary pads: a receiver mounted beneath the Cayenne and a weatherproof ground pad installed in the owner’s parking space. Once the vehicle is correctly positioned and the parking brake is engaged, charging begins automatically without connecting a cable.
Porsche’s Surround View parking system helps the driver line the vehicle up with the pad. The Cayenne then lowers itself to reduce the distance between the two components, allowing energy to transfer inductively across a gap of only a few centimeters.
Maximum charging power is 11 kW, putting it in line with a conventional home AC wallbox. Porsche claims approximately 90% efficiency when transferring energy from the grid into the vehicle’s battery.
The system also supports familiar features, including scheduled charging and cabin preconditioning. Charging activity and vehicle access can be managed through the My Porsche app.
It’ll Cost Nearly €7,000 In Germany
That added convenience doesn’t come cheaply. According to pricing listed in Porsche’s German configurator, the vehicle-side charging hardware costs €1,844.50, while the three-phase ground pad is €5,116.99.
Together, that’s €6,961.49, or nearly $8,000, before any additional installation expenses. Buyers can alternatively order only the required pre-installation for €226.10 and add the remaining hardware later.
Porsche has incorporated several safeguards into the system. Motion and foreign-object detection can stop charging if a person or animal approaches the charging area or if a metallic object on the ground pad begins heating up.
The approximately 50-kilogram ground plate can be installed indoors or outdoors and is designed to withstand being driven over. It also features LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity for over-the-air software updates.
The Cayenne Electric Gets Even More Tech
Wireless charging isn’t the only new option arriving for the Cayenne Electric. Porsche has also introduced electrically assisted doors, an upgraded massage system incorporating 4D audio, and Paint to Sample availability that expands the SUV’s palette to 105 colors.
Wireless charging is easily the more interesting addition from an EV perspective, though. Porsche has effectively turned the owner’s parking spot into a giant charging pad. Just pull in, park correctly, and walk away while the Cayenne handles the rest.
