Nissan has added another Guinness World Record to the Qashqai’s growing list of achievements, this time with a feat that directly highlights the capabilities of its unique e-Power hybrid technology. The compact SUV traveled an impressive 1,230 miles without stopping to refuel or recharge.
The record was set in Colombia during a four-day drive from Bogotá to the country’s Caribbean coast. Guinness World Records officials independently monitored and verified the attempt before officially recognizing the achievement.
Unlike conventional hybrid systems, the Qashqai e-Power uses its gasoline engine only to generate electricity. The wheels are driven exclusively by an electric motor, giving it a driving experience that feels much closer to a battery-electric vehicle.
While the record demonstrates the potential of Nissan’s latest hybrid system under carefully planned conditions, it also showcases the long-distance capability that series-hybrid technology can deliver without relying on external charging infrastructure.
A Record-Setting Journey Across Colombia
The record attempt took place between July 14 and July 17, covering a variety of driving conditions that included city streets, highways, mountain roads, and coastal routes. Nissan said every stage of the journey was supervised and later certified by Guinness World Records judges.
The SUV completed the entire 1,230-mile journey without adding fuel or plugging into a charger. That earned it the title for the longest journey completed by a non-plug-in extended-range electric SUV without external charging or refueling.
Nissan has not released detailed fuel economy figures from the drive or disclosed the complete route. However, the journey included a significant descent from Bogotá’s high elevation to sea level, allowing regenerative braking to recover energy during portions of the trip.
How Nissan’s e-Power System Works

The Qashqai’s e-Power system differs from most traditional hybrids because its gasoline engine never directly powers the wheels. Instead, a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine generates electricity for a small battery and the electric drive motor.
Power is sent exclusively through the electric motor, providing the smooth acceleration and immediate throttle response typically associated with electric vehicles. Drivers still refuel with gasoline as normal, eliminating the need to plug the vehicle into a charger.
The latest generation of e-Power also features Nissan’s compact 5-in-1 powertrain, which combines the electric motor, generator, inverter, reducer, and increaser into a single integrated unit. Regenerative braking continuously captures energy during deceleration to improve overall efficiency.
Real-World Record Versus Everyday Driving
Although the record is impressive, it shouldn’t be viewed as an indication of what most owners can expect during daily driving. Factors such as route selection, elevation changes, driving style, weather, and traffic all played a role in maximizing the vehicle’s range.
The official WLTP rating for the latest Qashqai e-Power is significantly lower than the record-setting distance. Nissan says the newest system also improves fuel economy, reduces cabin noise, and extends service intervals compared with the previous generation.
During independent testing, reviewers have reported fuel economy figures that are solid for a compact SUV, although nowhere near the numbers achieved during the carefully managed record attempt. That isn’t unusual, as world-record runs are typically designed to maximize efficiency under favorable conditions.
Another Milestone For Nissan’s Hybrid Technology

This marks Nissan’s latest long-distance demonstration of its e-Power technology, following previous endurance drives in the United Kingdom and Australia. The company continues to use these events to highlight the benefits of its series-hybrid approach as it expands its electrified vehicle lineup.
For buyers who want an EV-like driving experience without worrying about charging infrastructure, e-Power offers a different solution than both traditional hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Whether it can gain wider acceptance outside markets where it’s already sold remains to be seen, but this latest Guinness World Record certainly gives Nissan another headline to promote its unconventional hybrid technology.
