A pedestrian in New York City narrowly escaped a potentially deadly crash after a speeding Chevrolet Corvette collided with a Mercedes-Benz SUV and careened onto the sidewalk. Surveillance footage shows the Corvette striking the pedestrian before finally coming to rest beside a building.
The crash happened at approximately 6:30 a.m. Thursday at Sherman Avenue and West 204th Street in Inwood, Manhattan. Police told ABC7 New York that the Corvette had been traveling east on Sherman Avenue before colliding with the Mercedes at the intersection.
The 34-year-old pedestrian was entering the crosswalk when the collision sent the Corvette toward him. Despite the severity of the impact, he was transported to Harlem Hospital in stable condition.
The Corvette’s 27-year-old driver and a passenger were also hospitalized in stable condition. Police arrested the Corvette driver, while authorities are still searching for the person who was driving the Mercedes.

Security footage shows the two vehicles entering the intersection from different directions before the Corvette crashes into the side of the black Mercedes SUV. The force of the collision sends both vehicles violently out of control.
The Corvette rotates toward the sidewalk, striking the pedestrian along the way. It then continues toward the corner before eventually stopping alongside a building.
ABC7 reported that the Mercedes struck a parked and unoccupied moped after the initial collision. Its driver then exited the SUV and fled the scene before police arrived.
Footage from immediately after the crash shows extensive damage to both vehicles. Considering the energy involved and the Corvette’s path onto the sidewalk, the fact that nobody was reported to have suffered life-threatening injuries is remarkable.
Corvette Driver Faces Multiple Charges
Police identified the Corvette driver as 27-year-old Eric Torres. He has been charged with reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
Authorities are continuing to search for the Mercedes driver. Police have not publicly identified that person, and the circumstances surrounding their decision to leave the scene are under investigation.
Investigators are also examining whether one or both vehicles were drag racing before the collision. That possibility has not been confirmed, so the incident is still under investigation rather than a confirmed street-racing crash.
Residents Say Reckless Driving Is A Recurring Problem
People living near the intersection told ABC7 that dangerous driving has become a persistent problem in the neighborhood. One resident described seeing different cars performing donuts and recalled a previous incident involving a BMW hitting parked vehicles nearby.
Visible tire marks around the intersection have added to residents’ concerns. Police are now investigating whether Thursday’s crash was connected to the kind of reckless driving neighbors say they regularly witness.
A worker inside the corner store described the collision as sounding like an explosion. He also recalled fearing that the out-of-control Corvette was going to crash directly into him as it approached the building.
A Frighteningly Close Call
The most disturbing part of the surveillance video is how little time the pedestrian had to react. He was simply approaching the crosswalk when two vehicles collided and sent thousands of pounds of metal toward the sidewalk.
Three people were hospitalized but were reported in stable condition, while the Mercedes driver is still wanted by police. Whatever investigators ultimately determine happened before the crash, the footage demonstrates how quickly high-speed driving on city streets can endanger people who have nothing to do with it. This pedestrian happened to survive an impact that could easily have produced a very different outcome.
