A Hyundai Accent owner told his neighbor that his brakes felt a little weak. When the neighbor checked them, he found damage so bad that he wondered how the car had been stopping at all. One brake pad was completely gone.
A caliper piston, which helps press the brake pads against the rotor, had popped out of place. Brake fluid had also leaked out, leaving the master cylinder empty. Somehow the owner had still been driving the Hyundai.
On October 28, 2026, the neighbor shared a photo of the damaged brakes on Reddit, where people were shocked by what they saw.
And the trouble wasn’t limited to one wheel. Both sides of the car had worn-through brake pads, but the damage was different on each side. As the neighbor answered questions in the comments, it became clear just how much had gone wrong.

My neighbor’s brakes “felt a little weak”

The neighbor shared the photo as u/toasters33 in r/Justrolledintotheshop, explaining that the brake pads on the car had worn on both sides.
On the side shown in the photo, the inner brake pad still had some material left. But the outer pad was completely worn away.
The passenger side had the opposite problem. Its inner pad had worn away first, cutting into the brake rotor.
With the outer pad gone on the first side, the caliper piston had pushed out too far and come loose. That allowed brake fluid to escape from the system.
Brake fluid helps send pressure from the pedal to the brakes. When it leaks, the brakes may no longer work properly. AAA advises that drivers with weak brakes have their cars towed rather than risk driving them.
How Did He Miss It?
With the brake pads worn down so far, the Hyundai must have been making quite a racket. Grinding noises are a common sign of worn brakes, but the owner had kept driving until the problem became much worse.
Even the neighbor couldn’t understand it.
“Right!?!? HOW can someone just ignore the loud noise this had to be making!?” he wrote on Reddit.
However, noise may not have been the only warning. Badly worn brakes can cause shaking when a driver tries to stop, but it’s unclear whether the Accent had been doing that. We do know, though, that the damage didn’t happen all at once.
One Reddit user joked that the driver must have had a powerful sound system to drown out the noise. Whatever the explanation, the owner had reached the point where the brake pads were gone, and the system was leaking fluid.
More troubling, the owner had been driving among other motorists with brakes in such poor shape.
“These people share the roads with us,” one person wrote.
The neighbor’s response captured his frustration.
“I can’t think about this. I’ll never drive on public roads again.”
