A night out near Fourth Street Live in downtown Louisville took a very unexpected turn for one couple, who wrapped up their evening not with a nightcap but with a live, au naturel performance nobody asked for.

Around 3:30 in the morning, Steve Acree and his wife were heading back to their car after a night out when they spotted a man doing what can only be described as the world’s most unconventional post-crime cooldown routine. The suspect, believed to be connected to a nearby car break-in involving a smashed rear window and stolen items from an orange station wagon, had apparently decided clothing was optional for the rest of the evening.

A Shower, a Hat, and Absolutely Nothing Else

The man hopped a fence, busted open a sprinkler head, and stood under the spray like he had a standing appointment. Outside temperatures were hovering around 50 to 55 degrees, which, for the record, is not warm. Car guys know the feeling of standing outside in the cold, admiring a build at a show, but this was a different kind of dedication to the elements.

Acree tried to strike up a conversation, but the man appeared completely disoriented, repeating the same phrases. When Acree called the police, and they asked what the man was wearing, the answer was beautifully simple: “Not too much. He’s completely nude.” The one exception? A hat. The man had a hat on. Fashion is personal.

Police Respond, and the Situation Gets Messier

Officers eventually detained the man, though it took several attempts since he broke free more than once before being secured. He was transported to UofL Hospital for evaluation and is believed to have been under the influence while also possibly experiencing a mental health crisis.

No name, age, or charges have been formally released as of this report.

Acree, to his credit, kept perspective about the whole thing. He said he genuinely hopes the incident becomes a turning point for the young man. That is a remarkably generous outlook from someone who just watched a stranger take a DIY shower in a parking lot at 3 a.m.

The orange station wagon, for its part, is out one rear window and probably deserves a spa day of its own.
