Not every suspect that shows up at a sheriff’s office arrives in the back of a patrol car. Sometimes, they try to climb in through the windows instead.
That’s apparently what happened recently at the Cass County Sheriff’s Office in Michigan, where deputies encountered not one, but two curious raccoons attempting to scale the exterior walls of the building.
The sheriff’s office shared the unusual encounter on social media, posting several photos that quickly caught the attention of animal lovers and law enforcement supporters alike. While deputies are certainly used to dealing with all sorts of unexpected situations, it’s safe to say that “raccoons climbing the side of the building” isn’t an everyday occurrence.
Judging by the photos, the pair of masked visitors appeared determined to make their way inside. I guess it’s a good thing that the masked intruders were trying to get into a police station!
Deputies Discover Pair of Masked Climbers Outside Sheriff’s Office
One image shows a raccoon perched on an exterior windowsill, staring through the glass as though it had official business to discuss. Honestly, it almost looks like the little guy is waiting for someone to open it up for him.
A second photo captures one of the raccoons in the middle of its climb, gripping the side of the sheriff’s office building with surprising ease. Anyone familiar with raccoons probably isn’t shocked by the athletic display.
These animals are well known for their climbing abilities and curious personalities, often finding themselves in places they probably shouldn’t be.
Still, most raccoons typically limit their adventures to attics, trash cans, and bird feeders, not law enforcement facilities.
The final photo shared by the sheriff’s office shows one of the raccoons safely in the arms of a deputy. The officer can be seen holding the animal while posing for the camera, proving once again that police officers never truly know what their shift will bring.
The department did not indicate exactly why the raccoons were attempting to scale the building or whether they were searching for food, shelter, or simply acting on curiosity. To be fair, raccoons are naturally inquisitive animals.
One Raccoon Even Managed To Secure a Meeting With a Deputy
According to wildlife experts, raccoons are highly intelligent mammals capable of solving problems, opening containers, and navigating complex environments. Their dexterous front paws allow them to climb, grab, and investigate objects with remarkable skill.
Unfortunately, those same talents occasionally land them in unusual situations. While the sheriff’s office did not provide details regarding what ultimately happened to the pair, the social media post suggests that deputies ensured the animals were safely removed without harm.
As adorable as the photos may be, wildlife experts generally advise against approaching or attempting to handle wild raccoons yourself. Although raccoons often appear friendly, they can become aggressive if frightened or cornered and may carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans or pets.
Whether they were attempting to turn themselves in, looking for snacks, or simply conducting their own unofficial inspection of the sheriff’s office, one thing is certain: these two visitors definitely made the deputies’ day a little more memorable.
