Mercedes CEO Says Baby G-Class Is Coming “Sooner Than You Think”

Mercedes-Benz has been teasing a smaller version of its iconic G-Class for years, but the wait may finally be coming to an end. The German automaker has now offered a clearer indication of when enthusiasts can expect to see the compact off-roader.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius confirmed that the so-called Baby G-Class is coming “sooner than you think.” When pressed for a timeline, he revealed that it would be unveiled in less than 24 months.

That points to a debut before October 2028, although Mercedes hasn’t announced an exact date. The smaller SUV was originally confirmed in 2023, making it one of the brand’s most anticipated upcoming models.

However, anyone expecting a miniature copy of the full-size G-Wagen might be surprised. Mercedes executives have made it clear that the newcomer will have its own identity, even if it borrows some familiar styling cues.

Mercedes-AMG CEO Stefan Weckbach, who also oversees the G-Class business, says the smaller SUV will target a different segment. According to Weckbach, it will be “significantly different” from its larger sibling rather than simply reproducing the same formula on a smaller scale.

The original G-Class is one of the most capable and expensive luxury off-roaders on sale, so the Baby G could introduce the distinctive boxy styling to buyers who don’t need, or struggle to justify, the full-size model.

It Won’t Forget Its Off-Road Roots

Despite the differences, Mercedes isn’t abandoning the qualities that made the G-Class famous. Källenius has promised that the smaller SUV will offer “very good off-road capability,” although its exact mechanical specifications are still under wraps.

Camouflaged development vehicles have already been spotted testing in Europe, suggesting work is progressing. The Baby G is expected to retain recognizable G-Class design elements, but its proportions and engineering will reflect its different positioning.

Gas And Electric Versions Are Planned

Mercedes previously indicated that the smaller G-Class would be electric, but its plans have since expanded. Company executives have confirmed that combustion-powered and fully electric versions are planned, giving buyers a choice of powertrains.

Production is planned for Mercedes’ Kecskemét factory in Hungary, rather than the Austrian facility responsible for the full-size G-Class. Pricing, engine specifications, and availability in individual markets have yet to be confirmed.

With the original G-Class commanding a six-figure starting price in the United States, a smaller alternative could broaden the model’s appeal considerably. Whether the Baby G can capture the original’s character while establishing its own identity will be the real test.
