A man walked into a supermarket in Florida carrying a rifle and pointed it at several people in an attempt to steal a watch, Orlando police say.

Orlando Police Department officers responded to a Sedano’s supermarket on 5660 Curry Ford Road on Sept. 10 after receiving multiple 911 calls about a Hispanic man walking around the store with a rifle.

Surveillance footage released by police shows the suspect, identified as Juby Manuel Vera, approaching a jewelry counter at the supermarket with the rifle in his hands. Police say he then pointed the rifle at a customer before pointing it at a store clerk.

Vera demanded that the store clerk give him a watch he saw at the jewelry counter. When he did not receive it, he walked out of the store on foot, carrying the rifle as if nothing had happened.

Casually Walks Away

According to an arrest affidavit cited by WESH 2, Vera told officers that he saw a watch he believed was stolen from his residence. He reportedly demanded that the clerk give it to him, but the clerk did not.

In the footage released by the police department, you can see Vera walking along a street with the rifle still resting over his shoulder before officers were able to locate him.

Vera was eventually caught by officers near a bus stop with guns drawn. Body camera footage shows Vera complying and getting on the ground where he was put in handcuffs without further incident.

Real or Fake?

The arrest affidavit that was obtained by WESH 2 also says that Vera repeatedly told officers the rifle he was carrying was fake. However, police noted the people involved believed it was real.

One witness spoke with WESH 2 and disputed Vera’s claim. The witness was told by officers the rifle was in fact real and contained two rounds.

The Charges

According to the police department, Vera was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm and one count of attempted robbery with a firearm.

Attempts to search for Vera’s booking information were unsuccessful. However, WESH 2 reported that he was booked into the Orange County Jail on a bond of $10,000 and has retained a private attorney. There was no word on a set court date or exactly when he was released.

Vera is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
