A dog named Archer found an unexpected way to escape a dangerous situation near the Border Freeway in El Paso when he jumped into a police vehicle during an attempt to get him to safety.

Archer was reunited with his family after El Paso Animal Services and the El Paso Police Department worked together to get him out of danger on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Animal Protection Officer Cobo responded to the area as El Paso police officers attempted to secure Archer. While officers were trying to catch him, the dog jumped into one of the police vehicles, according to El Paso Animal Services.

Archer’s Owners Located

The unexpected move helped officers secure Archer. Cobo then got the dog to a safer location and scanned him for a microchip.

The microchip contained contact information for Archer’s family, allowing Animal Services to identify his owner and make contact. Archer was then reunited with the family that had been looking for him.

El Paso Animal Services credited its partnership with the police department and Cobo’s efforts with helping return Archer home. The department also used the incident to remind pet owners about the importance of keeping microchip information current.

A registered microchip can provide animal services workers with a way to identify a lost pet’s owner when their animal is found. El Paso Animal Services regularly promotes microchipping as part of its efforts to reunite lost pets with their families.

The department offers free microchipping opportunities around El Paso. Its animal protection information also advises residents to keep pets properly restrained and identified when they are outside the home.

For Archer, the microchip helped turn an unusual rescue into a successful reunion.

One commenter described the outcome as a “good ending,” while another praised the cooperation between police and animal services.
