If you thought collecting classic coins was niche, try keeping up with MINI variants. BMW’s pint-sized brand has been spinning out special editions, trims, body styles and design collabs for so long that a dedicated official register might be the only way most enthusiasts can tell them apart.
And now, with the fresh MINI Paul Smith Edition, the catalog just got a new chapter that blends British fashion swagger with iconic MINI personality.
The Paul Smith Edition is not a one-trick pony. This collaboration with legendary British designer Paul Smith stamps his “Classic with a Twist” aesthetic across the entire MINI Cooper family, and that’s a big deal because the MINI line itself has grown into a labyrinth of models, trims and past obsessions.
It’s only right for us to report what makes this latest special edition special, and why you might soon need both a glossary and a bingo card to keep track of every MINI variant ever made.
Paul Smith Meets MINI Mania

First things first. The MINI Paul Smith Edition applies Smith’s design language to a range of current Cooper models, starting with the fully electric MINI Cooper SE Paul Smith Edition. This EV packs 218 hp and can sprint from 0 to 60 in about 6.7 seconds, wrapping modern performance in classic MINI charm.
Exterior colors are where this edition really plays with personality. There’s Midnight Black paired with gloss and matte black stripes for a stealthy look, “Inspired White” with a vibrant Nottingham Green roof (a nod to Paul Smith’s hometown) and an exclusive Statement Grey that sets these cars apart from the regular lineup.
Every version gets Nottingham Green accents on the mirrors, grille outline and hubcaps with Paul Smith lettering emblazoned front and rear.

Inside, MINI and Paul Smith didn’t stop at upholstery. Cabin details include Nightshade Blue seats, black knitted surfaces with tone-on-tone stripes, a light projection that spells out “Hello” when you open the door and the designer’s motto, “Every day is a new beginning” on the door sill. E
ven the steering wheel gets a textile band in signature stripes and there’s a whimsical rabbit graphic on the floor mats straight out of Paul Smith’s personal creative idiom.
The Paul Smith Edition will roll out on the 3-door hatch first, with 5-door and convertible variants arriving in mid-2026.
How Many MINIs Are There Again?
Take a deep breath here because the MINI family isn’t exactly small. At a basic level, today’s lineup includes several body formats: the classic 3-door hatch, 5-door, convertible, the Aceman compact crossover, and the larger Countryman SUV.
On top of that, you have both combustion and electric powertrains across those bodies, let alone all the trim levels from base to sportier Cooper S and John Cooper Works performance versions.

Then factor in MINI’s penchant for special editions over the decades. Past entries in the Mini Heritage archive show Checkmate, Seven, Park Lane, Sidewalk and countless anniversary models going back to the 1990s and earlier. Some celebrate racing history, others nod to British pop culture, and others embrace quirky color schemes and trim choices that make each one unique.
Some are ultra-limited and highly collectible. Some are regional exclusives you may never see on your home streets. Some were quirky enough to be legendary. The point is this. If the automotive world ever needs a comprehensive MINI register, it will have to list not just body variants and engine types but dozens of special finishes and collabs. You could spend more time reading about MINIs than driving them.
Why the Frequent Specials?

BMW is in the best position to answer that question. But the Paul Smith Edition is not just another paint job. It represents a bridging of worlds — automotive design meeting high fashion — on a scale that really gives MINI a refreshed cultural cachet.
Smith’s creative heritage and subtle humor bring nuance that avoids the usual purely cosmetic factory special and instead feels thoughtfully designed.
In a crowded Toyota Corolla-dominated market, a MINI still feels like a personality-filled choice. And this latest edition, with its vibrant rooflines, bespoke interior touches and a story that stretches back to classic British design traditions, signals that some cars can be small without being trivial.
That said, given the sheer number of MINIs now out there, half the fun might just be remembering which is which.
