Hit the deer advice

While it may sound counterintuitive, one man’s driving advice is going viral on TikTok. The man behind the account @SamTheInsMan is telling drivers to make a controversial decision when they are faced with a certain obstacle in the road.

“In case nobody has told you yet, hit the deer,” he began the video. “Smash it, run right through it.” The advice sounds odd at first listen, but once Sam actually explained the reasoning, it made a lot more sense.

Not only can hitting the deer be safer than hitting something else, but according to Sam, it could also save you some money. That sounds like something a lot of people are in agreement over, as well.

Now, the post is going viral, and it has received more than 112,300 likes. Nearly 2,000 people have also jumped into the comments to share their own stories about facing off against animals on the road.

Insurance Agent Tells Drivers to “Hit the Deer”

@samtheinsman 🦌 Sometimes hitting the deer is better than swerving into something worse. Brake, stay straight, and stay safe! #InsuranceTips #CarInsurance #DrivingTips #DeerSeason ♬ original sound – SamTheInsMan | Sam Kessler

Sam’s advice makes sense the more you think about it. That’s because sometimes people overreact when trying to avoid deer, potentially driving into oncoming traffic, which can lead to a serious crash. Sam also said a driver who swerves could be found at fault. “Brake, stay straight, and stay safe,” he captioned his video.

‘If you hit the deer, it’s going to be a comprehensive claim,” he explained later in his video, saying that drivers with certain policies may not even have a deductible.

A Lot of People Found the Advice Hilarious

Commenters were quick to laugh about the advice, posting their own takes on Sam’s video. “When in doubt, take Bambi out,” one person wrote.

“Hit the deer, avoid the moose,” another suggested.

“Yes, someone died in my town last year because of this,” a person wrote in response. “Cows, horses, moose, swerve.”

“Two deer in one year, one totaled my truck, one busted up my camper,” another person wrote. “Insurance got me into a newer truck and fully covered my camper. Worth it!”

Sam’s Advice Shouldn’t Be Taken Lightly

Although he presented his advice humorously, Sam added a disclaimer to his caption to make sure nobody misunderstood what he meant. “Disclaimer: I’m not saying to intentionally hit a deer,” he wrote. “If a collision is unavoidable, braking and maintaining control is generally safer than swerving.”

Sam went on to say that every situation is different, and safety should always come first.

His advice is consistent with guidance from some road-safety organizations. Safety Insurance posted a story about deer-related accidents, advising drivers not to swerve to avoid deer. Instead, the website suggests braking, holding the steering wheel, and trying to bring your car to a controlled stop.

The website also advises drivers to stay alert in areas where deer are common, especially during dawn and dusk, when deer are most active. Of course, none of that has quite the same ring as “Hit the deer,” which is likely why Sam’s post drew so much attention.
