Law enforcement was on proactive patrol in Connecticut when they spotted a stolen Toyota Camry, leading to a foot chase that resulted in the apprehension of four juveniles.

The Waterbury Police Department said officers assigned to its Auto Theft Task Force were out on Sept. 29 in the area of Sylan Avenue and Baldwin Street.

The proactive patrols were part of an investigation into a stolen motor vehicle. Officers eventually spotted a black Toyota Camry that was reported stolen out of Waterbury.

Police say when officers approached the vehicle, four juveniles ran out of the car on foot, and the chase began.

Fled on Foot

A brief foot pursuit followed as officers chased the juveniles, who went in separate directions throughout the area.

A video released by the Waterbury Police Department shows officers pursuing the juveniles through streets and jumping over fences as they chase the suspects.

The footage shows officers catching the juveniles individually during the pursuit.

Four juveniles were ultimately apprehended with assistance from officers assigned to the department’s Crime Prevention Unit and Patrol Division. Police said the juveniles were apprehended without further incident.

The department did not release the ages or identities of the juveniles or provide information about charges stemming from the incident.

About the Task Force

Officers involved were a part of Waterbury’s Auto Theft Task Force, which focuses on reducing vehicle thefts and recovering stolen vehicles.

On the police department’s website, it explains that the task force detectives analyze theft patterns, gather intelligence, interview offenders, and work with other agencies as part of their investigations.

The task force had a similar encounter earlier in September involving a stolen-vehicle investigation involving a juvenile.

A Similar Incident

On Sept. 12, officers with the task force were patrolling the area of Walnut Avenue and Walnut Street in response to a stolen vehicle.

Officers located the vehicle, described as a 2015 blue Subaru Outback, and encountered a 14-year-old boy in connection with it. Police say the boy also fled on foot during this encounter when he noticed the officers.

After a brief pursuit, officers apprehended him without further incident. Police say he was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle and interfering with police.

Making it similar to the Sept. 29 case, where four juveniles fled on foot after officers spotted the stolen vehicle.

Waterbury police went on to say the department remains committed to addressing stolen motor vehicle activity throughout their city.
