There has been much talk about Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, and now the American automaker has teased its new truck, with prices starting at just under $30,000.
This comes after Ford backtracked from its ambitious all-electric vehicle strategy, announcing a massive $19.5 billion write-down and restructuring charge in 2025.
Ford suffered due to slow consumer demand, high production costs, and changing federal policies. Thus, the brand shifted its focus to building profitable, affordable electric vehicles at scale.
It plans to do that through the Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, a next-generation vehicle architecture developed by a specialized skunkworks team. The platform reduces overall components by 20% and cuts production fasteners by 25%, helping Ford price the Fathom more competitively.
More Passenger Volume Than the Toyota RAV4
Ford immediately compared the Fathom to America’s best-selling SUV, the Toyota RAV4, claiming its upcoming truck will have more “passenger volume.” The automaker also confirmed that the Fathom will come equipped with bidirectional power capability.
Ford hints that the Fathom will be unlike any electric vehicle owners are used to, suggesting to potential owners that the truck will be equipped with features they did not expect.
While images and specifications of the upcoming truck have not been revealed, Ford calls it the beginning of a new era of “Electric.” Equipped with a standard-range battery, the Fathom will be offered at an MSRP of $28,350, excluding destination and delivery or dealer documentation fees.
What we do know is that the Fathom will come with a large touchscreen display featuring easy-to-use navigation, a Digital Key, Ford app remote control, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Preorders are set to begin in early 2027.
Why Did Ford Call It Fathom?
The word “fathom” has several meanings. It originally referred to a unit of measurement equal to six feet (1.8 meters), commonly used to measure the depth of water.
Over time, the term evolved to also mean understanding something thoroughly, especially a complex idea or difficult situation after careful thought.
Ford says the word represents the idea that its upcoming electric pickup goes beyond what is visible on the surface, offering more depth than first meets the eye. The brand stated:
“We named it Fathom because real depth comes from deeply understanding how you live. Inspired by the classic measure of open arms, Fathom welcomes you in with an expansive interior and technology that adapts on the fly. Designed so you don’t have to settle, there’s far more beneath the surface than meets the eye.”
Apart from the name, Ford also answered whether the Fathom will come equipped with BlueCruise in its FAQ section.
BlueCruise is an advanced Level 2 hands-free highway driver-assist system that allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel on pre-mapped, controlled-access highways known as “Hands-Free Blue Zones.” The brand stated:
“Every Ford Fathom will be BlueCruise Capable for hands-free highway driving.”
