The idea of a four-door Ford Mustang has floated around for years, but it is reportedly getting much closer to reality. Ford has now shown dealers a physical prototype of a Mustang sedan known internally as the Mach-4, according to Automotive News, which spoke with people who attended a private meeting in Las Vegas.
The early car was reportedly described as similar in size and general proportions to a Porsche Panamera, giving the Mustang family a much larger and more practical member. Dealers were also told Ford is targeting a starting price below $40,000 and acceleration to 60 mph in under four seconds.
Ford has not publicly unveiled the Mach-4 or confirmed those specifications, so the details should still be treated as preliminary. Independent reporting nevertheless indicates this is no longer simply a speculative rendering, with a physical four-door Mustang concept now having been presented to the company’s retail network.
If it reaches production, the Mach-4 would represent one of the biggest changes to the Mustang formula since the Mach-E expanded the name into electric crossovers. Current reporting points toward a possible 2029-model-year arrival and suggests Ford may use an extended version of the existing Mustang’s rear-wheel-drive architecture.
Ford Reportedly Wants It Below $40,000

Perhaps the most surprising part of the dealer presentation was the proposed price. Reports indicate Ford told attendees it wants the four-door Mustang to start below $40,000, putting it far below premium fastbacks such as the Porsche Panamera it was apparently compared with visually.
That price would also place the Mach-4 within reach of buyers shopping ordinary performance sedans rather than luxury cars. Ford already sells the Mustang Mach-E from $37,795 for the 2026 model year, showing how tightly packed the lower end of a future Mustang family could become.
Dealers were told the sedan would provide impressive rear-seat space as well. Combined with four proper doors and a stretched wheelbase, that could make the Mach-4 a genuine family car without abandoning the performance identity Ford wants attached to Mustang.
Under Four Seconds To 60 MPH
Ford told dealers the Mach-4 should be capable of reaching 60 mph in less than four seconds. That would immediately make even the targeted sub-$40,000 version a serious performance sedan, assuming both claims survive the transition from prototype to production.
How Ford intends to achieve that performance is unclear. The company has not confirmed engines, transmissions, drive layout, battery systems, or whether multiple powertrain types will eventually be offered.
MotorTrend reports that an elongated version of the current S650 Mustang architecture is considered likely. That could theoretically allow Ford to retain familiar Mustang hardware rather than developing an entirely separate platform, although final production specifications remain unconfirmed.
EcoBoost And Coyote Power Could Be Possible

One of the more enticing possibilities is that the Mach-4 could share engines with the regular Mustang. The current S650 lineup already accommodates everything from the turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder to several versions of Ford’s 5.0-liter Coyote V8.
Both engines could fit into the four-door program, potentially creating everything from an affordable turbo sedan to a V8 performance flagship. A manual transmission has even been discussed as a possibility for certain versions, although Ford has not confirmed any such production plans.
Keeping combustion power would also give the Mach-4 a different role from the Mustang Mach-E. Rather than replacing the traditional pony car, the sedan could effectively stretch its mechanical character into something capable of carrying adults comfortably in the rear.
Detroit Could Have A New Performance-Sedan Fight
A four-door Mustang would arrive at an interesting time for American performance cars. Dodge already offers its latest Charger in both two- and four-door forms, giving Ford an obvious domestic rival if the Mach-4 reaches showrooms.
General Motors has also been linked to plans for future rear-wheel-drive passenger cars, including speculation surrounding a possible Camaro revival in 4-door form, and a new Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. None of that guarantees another full-scale Detroit muscle-car war, but performance sedans suddenly appear less dead than they did only a few years ago.
Ford’s strategy would also fit CEO Jim Farley’s willingness to expand passionate nameplates rather than returning to conventional commodity sedans. The Mustang Mach-E has already demonstrated that Ford is comfortable stretching the Mustang badge well beyond the traditional two-door coupe and convertible.

The biggest takeaway is that Ford has apparently progressed beyond sketches as dealers have now seen a four-door Mustang concept, while the Mach-4 name has also been associated with Ford’s plans for an expanded Mustang family.
Production could reportedly begin around 2028 or 2029, leaving plenty of time for the design, pricing, and mechanical specifications to change. A sub-$40,000, four-door Mustang capable of sub-four-second acceleration sounds extremely compelling, but those targets are dealer-preview claims rather than final production promises.
