A Florida man is facing charges as serious as manslaughter after he used a bow and arrow to take another person’s life. The incident happened on June 23 at about 2 pm after a heated argument at a property containing several homes and trailers along Arizona Street, just north of Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville.
According to Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis, deputies responded to reports of a shooting and discovered that the victim had suffered a devastating neck injury. However, I doubt they were expecting the manner in which it happened.
Investigators said the confrontation began when a man and a woman arrived at the woman’s residence and encountered 46-year-old Anthony Adams walking out of the home. Sheriff Nienhuis said the unexpected encounter quickly escalated into a verbal dispute.
As you would expect, it was not long after this verbal dispute that the actual shooting occurred.
Suspect Retrieved Compound Bow During Dispute
During the argument, Adams allegedly walked away from the scene and entered a nearby metal building, where he retrieved a compound bow. Adams then returned to the vehicle and approached the passenger side, where the victim was seated.
According to investigators, Adams fired a hunting arrow through the passenger-side window, striking the man in the neck. Officials said the victim or the woman inside the vehicle removed the arrow before emergency crews arrived.
The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, but later succumbed to his injuries. Sheriff Nienhuis emphasized that removing objects embedded in the body after a penetrating injury can significantly worsen a person’s condition.
Removing the Arrow May Have Made Injuries Worse
During a press briefing, Sheriff Neibhuis said, “The arrow was one of those hunting arrows — very, very sharp. It did enter the person’s neck through the passenger side window.”
Sheriff Nienhuis emphasized that removing objects embedded in the body after a penetrating injury can significantly worsen a person’s condition.
“When you do have a penetrating injury like that, wait for fire rescue to get here,” Nienhuis said. “It’s never a good idea to pull that out because there’s a possibility, maybe not, but a possibility this person might have lived. It was certainly made worse by pulling the arrow back out.”
Following the investigation, Adams was taken into custody and is now facing a manslaughter charge in connection with the incident.
Suspect Faces Manslaughter Charge
According to the sheriff, Adams has an extensive criminal history that includes previous arrests and convictions involving burglary, battery, and criminal mischief. Officials said he was out of prison on conditional release at the time of the shooting.
Authorities also revealed that the victim had a lengthy criminal record and had been designated as a sexual predator in Pinellas County dating back to before 2000.
“Normally, we don’t talk a lot about the victims, but you’ve probably heard me say many, many, many times that these violent acts very seldom occur to people that do not live a high-risk lifestyle,” Nienhuis said.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional details could be released as detectives continue to review the circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter.
