Florida Man Steals Bags of Tools From a Work Truck, Doesn’t Do a Great Job Hiding It

A tool theft case in Hillsborough County wrapped up quickly, thanks to surveillance footage and a bike that was hard to miss. The suspect was found the very next day riding the exact same bike with the trailer still attached that was caught on camera during the theft.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, 56-year-old Joe Talmadge Butts climbed into the back of a OneWay Air work truck parked at a business on Windhorst Road on August 21 and loaded several bags of stolen tools worth hundreds of dollars onto a trailer attached to his bike. Deputies used the tools at their disposal following the theft to identify him as the suspect.

Surveillance cameras at the business captured the entire theft on video, giving deputies a clear view of both Butts and the setup he used to haul the stolen tools away. That footage became the key piece of evidence in the case.

That investigative work paid off quickly. Deputies didn’t need much time to connect the dots once they knew exactly what they were looking for.

The Getaway Vehicle Wasn’t the Best

Part of what made this case move so quickly is that Butts wasn’t very smart after the robbery. A bike pulling a visible cart isn’t a hard thing to spot twice, and it ended up being the detail that connected him directly back to the surveillance footage.

That distinct bike and trailer would be a dead giveaway to anyone who is searching for him.

Fortunately, it didn’t take long for police to find Butts.

He Was Found the Next Day, Still Riding the Same Bike

The break in the case came fast. On August 22, just one day after the theft, deputies spotted Butts riding the same bike, pulling the same trailer that had been caught on surveillance video, and arrested him on the spot.

During the arrest, methamphetamine was found in Butts’ pocket, adding a drug charge on top of the theft case. Butts should’ve thought of a better way to hide his stolen tools.

Commenters Were Confused as to What His Plan Was

The sheriff’s office post didn’t take long to pick up reactions. One commenter joked that, at this point, seeing tools pulled behind a bike is basically a red flag on its own, likening it to spotting someone riding one bike while holding a second.

A few comments focused on Butts’ mugshot, with one saying he looked older than his listed age and another noting that the theft happened just across the street from the jail. Between the surveillance footage and the bike setup, Butts didn’t leave much room for mystery. The whole case, start to finish, took less than 24 hours to close.
