A quick overnight hotel stay for one Florida couple took a shocking turn.
25-year-old Ritchel Calvaire was arrested Sep. 10 after sneaking into Provident Doral hotel and hiding under a couple’s bed. The suspect was banned from the hotel only weeks earlier.
According to a Miami-Dade County affidavit, one of the victims told officers that they checked into Provident Doral the night of Sep. 9, and went to sleep shortly after. The woman was awakened by movement at 4 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. At 7:45 a.m., she looked under the bed to get her items, and she saw Calvaire.
Per the affidavit, the suspect sneaked into the hotel “without permission” at an unspecified time. He likely jumped over a balcony fence and entered the hotel room through its sliding glass door. After breaking in, Calvaire “concealed himself stealthily” under the couple’s bed.
Calvaire was allegedly already banned from the hotel on Aug. 31, but went back two days after to obtain things he left behind. Security escorted him out after he did so.
Calvaire’s Charges
The suspect was arrested on Sep. 10.
Calvaire currently faces a burglary charge and a first-degree misdemeanor charge of resisting an officer without violence, per the Miami-Dade County arrest record. All burglaries are considered felonies in Florida.
According to Florida lawyer Eric M. Matheny, a resident charged with second-degree felony burglary, or “Entering or remaining in any dwelling (occupied or unoccupied), an occupied structure, or an occupied conveyance without assault, battery, or a weapon” faces up to 15 years in prison and fines equaling $10,000.
A Floridian charged with resisting an officer without violence faces up to one year in jail, and a $1,000 fine.
As of Sep. 14, a hearing has not yet been set for Calvaire.
Rising Burglaries
Some data suggests that burglary rates have increased in Florida.
Per a report by Compare the Market, in the first five months of 2026, the state saw 18,743 burglaries so far. This is a 57% increase since 2025 when 11,957 burglaries were recorded.
Florida is not alone in this trend. States like New York, Delaware, Alaska, and Michigan also saw significant increases in burglaries.
To the contrary, other states saw big declines in burglaries this year.
Declining Burglaries
In the first five months of 2026 Texas reported 32,677 burglaries, a whopping 42% decline. Illinois saw 5,787 burglaries, 58% less than 2025.
Other states including Washington, North Carolina, North Dakota and others saw significantly less burglaries.
