A Florida man who stole $1.4 million from his employer to fund a gambling addiction has been sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison. After his arrest, he became the director of the state’s gambling addiction helpline.

Philip Lee Sullivan, 43, was sentenced on October 16, 2026, after pleading no contest to six felony grand theft charges. Bay County Circuit Judge Timothy Register sentenced him to 118.5 months in state prison and ordered him to pay restitution.

Sullivan previously worked as chief financial officer for Royal American, a Panama City Beach real estate company. An internal audit uncovered unauthorized purchases made with a company-issued credit card, leading to his arrest in March 2024.

Before sentencing, Sullivan appeared on the Addicted Recovery Show podcast and explained how his gambling escalated from $25 sports bets to wagers of $50,000. He also revealed how he converted company-funded purchases into money he could gamble.

Sullivan described purchasing gift cards with his employer’s credit card, selling them for cryptocurrency, and depositing the proceeds into an offshore gambling account.

He admitted that $1.2 million of the stolen money was spent during a particularly intense four-month period.

On Halloween 2023, he recalled winning approximately $100,000 and realizing he could use the money to replace some of what he had taken.

“I could stop right now and I could put back the money that I took,” Sullivan recalled thinking. Instead, he said the winnings disappeared within two or three days.

His gambling losses eventually exceeded $2 million, according to his account of the betting records.

An Unexpected Career

After spending more than a month in jail following his arrest, Sullivan began rebuilding his life. He initially worked for a land-clearing business before approaching the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling about volunteering.

The organization eventually offered him a job, and he became director of its 888-ADMIT-IT helpline in March 2025.

During the podcast, Sullivan said he had personally spoken with more than 460 people struggling with gambling.

“It has given me greater purpose than I feel like I’ve ever had in my life,” he said.

Facing His Sentence

Sullivan also described how difficult it was to prepare his two sons, ages 12 and six, for the possibility of prison.

“We just have to prepare them for me being gone,” he said, becoming emotional during the interview.

He credited his wife with supporting him throughout his recovery, despite the financial damage and betrayal of trust.

Following the October 16 hearing, Sullivan was taken into custody to begin serving his sentence. WJHG reported that his six prison terms will run concurrently and that he was ordered to repay nearly $1.5 million.
