Firefighters Climb Into Surf To Rescue Dog Trapped After PCH Crash

A dog was carried to safety after becoming trapped inside a vehicle that crashed off Pacific Coast Highway and landed among shoreline rocks north of Malibu.

The single-vehicle crash happened Saturday, Oct. 3, along Highway 1 near Deer Creek Road.

The driver managed to get out of the vehicle with one of two dogs before firefighters arrived. The second dog remained trapped inside as crews made their way down toward the wreck.

The rescue brought together Ventura County firefighters and California State Parks lifeguards, with several other agencies responding along the highway above.

Video from the scene shows the badly damaged vehicle resting among rocks near the water as firefighters and lifeguards work around it.

The Ventura County Fire Department said firefighters arrived to find the vehicle off the roadway along the shoreline.

Firefighters and California State Parks lifeguards reached the vehicle, freed the trapped dog and carried it back up to the roadway.

Neither dog appeared to be injured.

One patient was taken to a local hospital in stable condition with minor injuries.

Ventura County Fire said Federal Fire Ventura County, California State Parks lifeguards, Gold Coast Ambulance and the California Highway Patrol also responded to the crash.

Photos released by the fire department showed both dogs safely above the shoreline after the rescue.

Crews eventually turned the scene over to CHP.
