A man in Ramsey County, Minnesota, is facing multiple charges after allegedly speeding away from a traffic stop, causing a highway crash as a result. Police said that the man then chose to run away from the scene, only to return moments later to be taken into custody.
According to the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO), the incident occurred on Friday, July 24. At around 11:50 p.m., a deputy driving his unmarked Chevy Silverado was driving on Interstate 694.
Just past the Rice Street Exit, the deputy witnessed a showcase of reckless driving. A Lexus blew past the unmarked vehicle, driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph, the sheriff’s office said.
Unfortunately for the driver, the man driving the Silverado was Undersheriff Mike Martin. At that moment, he was livestreaming on Live on Patrol. This means that thousands of viewers saw what was going on on I-684.
Speeding Chase Ends Abruptly
Undersheriff Martin immediately turned on his sirens and emergency lights. Still, as seen in the footage attached above, the Lexus driver wouldn’t stop.
Instead, the Lexus continued to speed away, driving recklessly while the undersheriff followed closely. This pursuit wouldn’t last long.
Less than a minute later, the Lexus swerved and clipped another vehicle. This caused both cars to be sent into the ditch on the right side of the road.
Fleeing Men Leave the Scene
The undersheriff approached the scene slowly and saw the two vehicles lying still in the ditch. A 48-year-old man, who was driving the other vehicle, was evaluated by medics.
Meanwhile, the Lexus driver and another passenger can be seen exiting the car. The vehicle backed up a bit directly at the unmarked Silverado, but no contact was made.
The footage showed the two men running away from the crash site. Meanwhile, smoke could be seen rising from the Lexus’ engine.
Men Return and Get Arrested
A few minutes later, the situation changed. Perhaps motivated by a sense of accountability, or maybe because they figured fleeing on foot on an interstate was a recipe for disaster, both men returned to the scene.
One of the men can be seen with his hands in the air. The other, meanwhile, appeared to be arguing with him, and both of them exited the undersheriff’s unmarked vehicle’s dashcam frame.
Both men were taken into custody. One of them, a 22-year-old man, was booked for fleeing. The other one, a 26-year-old, was arrested on an active Dakota County burglary warrant.
