A Michigan man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he tried to escape an arrest and struck an officer with his truck, running over his ankle with a trailer.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido announced that 37-year-old Jeremy Jamel Johnson of Detroit was behind the incident and was arraigned on Sept. 25. He is currently held on a $1 million bond.
It all began when Eastpointe Police were called to English Gardens around 1:40 a.m. Sept. 25, after receiving a report of a suspicious man inside a closed business.
Police later saw a landscaping truck and trailer leaving the area. Police say the trailer was reportedly loaded with items from English Gardens and had no license plate.
Approaching the Truck
According to Eastpointe Police, officers stopped the truck and spoke with Johnson, who was the only person inside.
Officers spoke with Johnson and told him to get out of the vehicle so they could place him under arrest. Instead, police say he started the truck and hit the gas while an officer was standing at the driver’s door.
The truck hit the officer, and the attached trailer ran over the officer’s ankle, according to police.
The injured officer received medical treatment and was later released.
The Chase Begins
With assistance from the Warren Police and St. Clair Shores police, officers pursued Johnson into Detroit.
During the pursuit, police say the trailer became damaged and scattered landscaping tools across the roadway. The debris left behind damaged at least one police vehicle.
Eastpointe Police also say that Johnson attempted to strike several police vehicles during the pursuit.
The pursuit came to an end after Johnson abandoned the truck and fled on foot. Police caught up to him, and he was arrested shortly thereafter.
A Huge Bond
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office charged Johnson with second-degree fleeing from a police officer, a 10-year felony; breaking with intent, a five-year felony; assaulting, resisting, or obstructing a police officer, causing injury, a four-year felony; and assault with a dangerous weapon, also known as felonious assault, a four-year felony.
Prosecutors also filed a fourth-offense habitual offender notice, which can serve as an aggravating factor at sentencing.
Johnson was booked into Macomb County Jail on Sept. 25 at 6:28 a.m. Magistrate Mark Makoski set his bond at a whopping $1 million. If that bond is paid, Johnson must remain home, wear a GPS tether, not operate a motor vehicle, and have no contact with English Gardens.
Johnson’s court date is set for Oct. 7 at 8 a.m. before Judge Kathleen G. Galen at the 38th District Court.
As always, Johnson is presumed innocent pending the results of his court appearance.
