A blue 1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that had reportedly been on display at a Victorville car show earlier Saturday ended the afternoon badly damaged beside a tractor-trailer, with two men headed to the hospital.

The crash was reported at about 3:21 p.m. Sept. 12 on Seventh Avenue between Nisqualli Road and Sitting Bull Street, according to Victor Valley News Group. Both adult men inside the Chevrolet were transported for treatment.

The driver suffered major injuries and had to be extricated from the Monte Carlo by firefighters before being taken to a trauma center. The passenger was also hospitalized.

VVNG reported that the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s preliminary investigation put the Monte Carlo northbound on Seventh Avenue at a high rate of speed before it crossed the center median and entered southbound traffic. There, it collided with a trailer being pulled by a white 2015 Kenworth tractor.

After The Turn

Witnesses told VVNG that the Monte Carlo had been traveling on Sitting Bull Street and turned right onto Seventh Avenue before its driver lost control.

That witness account is separate from the preliminary collision reconstruction attributed to the Sheriff’s Department, which placed the Chevrolet northbound on Seventh Avenue before it crossed the median.

The impact was strong enough to knock a tire from the trailer into the roadway near the Monte Carlo. The tractor-trailer driver stopped and remained at the scene, VVNG reported.

Earlier That Day

The Monte Carlo had apparently spent part of Saturday in much different surroundings.

VVNG reported that photos showed the classic Chevrolet on display earlier in the day at Victorville’s Route 66 Car Show and Block Party.

The City of Victorville independently confirms that the centennial celebration was held Saturday on 7th Street in Old Town. The city scheduled the event from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., with car-show judging, live music, contests, and other activities marking 100 years of Route 66.

More than 110 show cars were expected for the celebration, according to a city announcement before the event.

The crash was reported at about 3:21 p.m.

Seventh Shut Down

Victorville Public Works assisted with a hard closure of Seventh Avenue while the collision was investigated. VVNG reported that the road was closed in both directions between Nisqualli Road and Sitting Bull Street.

The Victorville Police Department, which is operated by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department under contract with the city, handles law-enforcement services in Victorville.

Its publicly available release feed did not contain a notice about this collision as of Sunday. The crash-specific reconstruction in this article therefore remains attributed to VVNG’s reporting of information it received from the Sheriff’s Department.

The investigation remained ongoing. VVNG reported that the Sheriff’s Department had not determined whether alcohol played a role in the collision.
