A regular traffic stop over a code violation in Fresno County, California, ended up with the recovery of over two dozen packages filled to the brim with cocaine. Its market value is estimated at about 2.5 million dollars.
According to a release shared by the California Highway Patrol – Central Division, the incident occurred on Sunday, July 26, 2026. CHP Coalinga officers noticed a 2019 Honda Ridgeline traveling on Interstate 5 in Fresno County.
The officers observed an unspecified vehicle code violation involving the Ridgeline. As a result, an enforcement stop was conducted.
During the stop, officers noticed what they deemed “several indicators consistent with criminal activity.” When asked, the driver ended up consenting to a vehicle search, which was probably their very last mistake.
$2.5 Million in Cocaine
The vehicle search resulted in the discovery of multiple 25-kilogram packages. In total, as seen in the CHP-shared photos, there were 25 packages, all piled on top of each other on the patrol unit’s hood.
The suspected narcotics were turned over to the Fresno High Impact Investigations Team. Testing confirmed that the packages contained cocaine.
The driver and a passenger were arrested as a result of the traffic stop. Their names were not disclosed. The seized cocaine’s estimated street value was calculated at around $2.5 million.
Similar Cocaine Bust
Less than two months before, a similar traffic stop in Siskiyou County took place. On May 29, 2026, at around 11:50 a.m., a deputy with the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) conducted a traffic stop on a 2022 Mazda CX5 for a mechanical violation.
The sheriff’s office stated that during the traffic stop, the driver displayed multiple indicators of criminal activity. To top it all off, they didn’t carry a license.
A vehicle inventory search was conducted, and an aftermarket false compartment was found. After a K-9 unit alerted to the presence of narcotics, the deputy found 19 kilograms of suspected cocaine. Its street value is calculated at $1.9 million.
51 Pounds of Marijuana
Just a day before the Coalinga incident, Putnam County deputies in New York conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 84 in the Town of Southeast. Deputies had observed a black GMC SUV commit multiple traffic violations.
A deputy observed signs that the driver, 35-year-old Reynalda G. Sierra Mejia, had been driving while impaired by drugs, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said. Then, a vehicle search was conducted.
The sheriff’s office detailed that 51 pounds of cannabis were found inside the car, all stored in various vacuum-sealed packages, as well as a quantity of suspected narcotics that tested positive for ketamine. Mejia now faces multiple charges, including first-degree possession of cannabis and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
