A fatal shooting involving an off-duty deputy in Atascocita, Texas, has drawn attention across social media after video tied to the case resurfaced online months after the incident. The case involved a Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputy, a 27-year-old man identified as Darrius Williams, and a child sitting inside a vehicle during the encounter.
The incident took place on the 5300 block of Treewood Drive in Harris County, northeast of Houston. Authorities said the shooting happened around 2:45 p.m. near West Lake Houston Parkway and Upper Lake Drive in a neighborhood lined with homes and parked vehicles.
According to investigators, the deputy had placed his child inside a car seat in the backseat of his vehicle shortly before the confrontation unfolded. Officials said Williams approached the vehicle and opened the passenger side door while the child remained inside.
The deputy, who was off duty at the time, reportedly issued verbal commands as Williams continued trying to get into the vehicle. Authorities said the deputy feared for his life and for the safety of his child before firing several shots.
Deputy Confronts Man Near Vehicle

Investigators said the deputy had been standing outside the vehicle when Williams approached. Harris County Sheriff’s Office officials later stated that the deputy believed the man was attempting to take control of the vehicle while the child remained strapped into the backseat.
Law enforcement officials said Williams ignored repeated commands to stop and continued trying to enter the SUV. The deputy then opened fire, striking Williams several times.
Emergency crews responded to the neighborhood after 911 calls reported gunfire and a man with a weapon. Video from the scene showed deputies, patrol vehicles, and crime scene tape spread across several sections of the street while investigators documented evidence near the vehicle.
Williams was transported to a hospital after the shooting. Authorities later confirmed that he died from his injuries. Officials said the deputy’s child was not injured during the incident. No other injuries were reported at the scene.
Investigation Brings New Attention to Case
The case returned to public discussion after video connected to the shooting circulated online in June 2026. The footage spread through posts on X, including one shared by Cars and Horsepower through the account @Horsepower37559.
The post from the automotive-focused account included only the word “Hmm.” while quoting another post that framed the deputy’s actions as an act of protection involving his child. The clip generated debate across social media platforms, where users argued over self-defense laws, use of force standards, and mental health treatment.
Officials have not announced charges against the deputy. Authorities said the investigation follows standard procedures used in officer involved shootings.
Fox 26 Houston reported that investigators spent hours processing evidence across the subdivision after the shooting. Aerial footage showed marked patrol units positioned around the block while deputies restricted access to portions of the neighborhood.
Family Says Williams Needed Mental Health Care
Members of Williams’ family later spoke publicly about his condition before the shooting. His mother, Tieneeshia Williams, said her son struggled with mental health issues and had been released from jail the night before the encounter.

According to family statements, Williams had previously been detained after walking into traffic and was also dealing with an outstanding warrant. His mother said she believed the system failed him and argued that he should have been placed in a psychiatric facility instead of being released.
The case has continued drawing responses from both law enforcement supporters and advocates calling for expanded mental health intervention programs. Supporters of the deputy argue that he acted to protect his child after a man attempted to enter the vehicle despite repeated warnings.
Others have focused on the circumstances surrounding Williams’ release from custody and questioned whether intervention services could have prevented the confrontation. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional findings from the investigation.
Authorities said the case remains under review.
