BMW put plenty of weight on the shoulders of the new iX3. As the first production model from its Neue Klasse generation, the electric SUV was supposed to demonstrate whether billions spent developing new EV technology could translate into actual customers.
One year after opening the European order books, BMW has a fairly convincing answer. Buyers have placed orders faster than the company can build the cars.
According to Der Spiegel, BMW has now accumulated 100,000 iX3 orders in Europe alone, which the automaker says is its best first-year order performance for any model. Demand elsewhere, including China, is adding to that total, although BMW hasn’t disclosed specific figures for those markets.
The immediate challenge is getting all those cars built. BMW’s new Debrecen factory in Hungary has been ramping up at record speed, and production is now reportedly running around the clock.
BMW Has Built 50,000 So Far
Series production began at Debrecen in late October 2025, and the 50,000th iX3 rolled off the line by the end of July. BMW says that represents the fastest production ramp-up of a new plant in the company’s history.
Strong demand prompted BMW to add a second shift earlier than originally planned, followed by a third. That effectively puts the Hungarian facility on a 24-hour production schedule as BMW works through its growing order book.
The factory ultimately has capacity for around 150,000 vehicles annually, leaving room for output to increase further as operations mature. Production of the standard-wheelbase iX3 is also expected to begin at BMW’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico during the second half of 2027.
Half Of X3 Orders Are Now Electric
The iX3 isn’t simply attracting existing BMW EV customers. Roughly one in three orders for a fully electric BMW in Europe since the model’s launch has been for the iX3.
Within the X3 family, the shift is even more striking. Around half of current European X3 orders are reportedly for the electric iX3 rather than its combustion-powered siblings.
That represents a strong opening act for Neue Klasse, BMW’s new generation of vehicle technology. The company plans to introduce 40 new or substantially updated models incorporating Neue Klasse technologies by the end of 2027, with the electric i3 sedan next in line.
The iX3 Is Just Getting Started
BMW is also beginning its U.S. rollout, where the 2027 iX3 50 xDrive starts at $61,500 and carries an EPA-estimated range of up to 434 miles. Its 400-kW peak DC charging capability can add up to 231 miles of range in 10 minutes under suitable conditions.
BMW sales boss Jochen Goller called reaching 100,000 orders within a year a “fantastic start” for Neue Klasse. Considering the company has built only about half that number so far, keeping the factories busy shouldn’t be difficult.
For an automaker launching a new generation of EVs, having too many customers waiting is a problem BMW will probably be happy to solve.
