A 19-year-old driver walked away from a rollover crash that left his car a mangled heap. According to the California Highway Patrol, one simple thing made the difference between him living and dying. It happened on Goldenrod Avenue, just north of Belmont. The teen drifted off the roadway and lost control of the vehicle. The car cleared a canal before slamming into the embankment on the other side, which sent it flipping end over end. What was left afterward was barely recognizable as a car.
By every measure, a crash that violent should have caused serious injuries. The driver didn’t have any injuries, and was virtually unharmed. The California Highway Patrol’s Fresno office shared photos of the wreck to show just how close a call it was. There was no mention of anyone else being hurt.
The reason the teen survived, in the CHP’s telling, came down to the buckled seatbelt. Their message was as direct as it gets, which is that seat belts save lives. That’s a choice most drivers make on autopilot. And that’s why this man had a second chance. He gets to go home because he took two seconds to “click it in”, as so many of the signs across highways remind us to do.
Why a Seat Belt Matters Most in a Rollover

It’s a two-second habit you should commit to memory before you pull out of the driveway. This 19-year-old made that small choice, and it’s the reason his story is a near-miss instead of a tragedy.
