Rare As Hen’s Teeth 1971 Chevrolet Corvette LS6 Coupe Needs A New Home

Chevrolet built plenty of Corvettes in 1971, but only a lucky few buyers got their hands on one with the mighty LS6 big-block V8. Just 188 examples were produced, making this one of the rarest factory engine combinations of the C3 generation.

One of those cars is now preparing to cross the auction block, and it’s a beauty. Finished in Classic White with a Dark Blue interior, this 1971 Corvette LS6 coupe will be offered at Mecum’s Kansas City auction on December 5.

Under its long hood sits a 454-cubic-inch V8 producing a factory-rated 425 horsepower. That’s serious muscle for 1971, especially when American performance cars were beginning to feel the effects of tightening emissions regulations.

This particular Corvette also has an unusual feature for such a high-performance machine: an automatic transmission. Purists might prefer shifting their own gears, but finding an LS6 Corvette with a factory three-speed automatic is no easy task.

A Big-Block Corvette From A Different Era

The LS6 was Chevrolet’s top-performing Corvette engine for 1971, featuring aluminum cylinder heads, a solid-lifter valvetrain, and a massive 454 cubic inches of displacement. Its factory-rated 425 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque made it a serious performer at a time when muscle cars were beginning to lose some of their bite.

Power reaches the rear wheels through a Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic transmission and Positraction differential. The car also comes equipped with power steering, power brakes, power windows, and an AM/FM radio.

Forget complicated driving modes and electronic trickery. This Corvette relies on a massive V8, rear-wheel drive, and plenty of old-school muscle to keep things entertaining.

Four Years Of Restoration Work

According to Mecum, the Corvette underwent a comprehensive four-year, nut-and-bolt restoration. The effort clearly paid off, judging by the awards it collected earlier this year.

In May 2026, the car received an NCRS Top Flight award, followed by Bloomington Gold certification in June. Both are highly regarded distinctions in the Corvette collector community.

Its history is also supported by documentation from General Motors of Canada, providing another layer of reassurance for collectors. With cars this rare, paperwork can be almost as exciting as what’s under the hood.

Mecum hasn’t published a presale estimate for the Corvette, although examples with this level of rarity and documentation can attract serious collector interest. The car is scheduled to cross the block on Saturday, December 5, as Lot V171.

Finding another LS6 Corvette with this kind of paperwork and judging history won’t be easy. The next owner will have a pretty good excuse to spend a lot of time in the garage, even if it’s just to admire that enormous V8.
