A delivery driver came back to a Virginia Beach home with an apology after a package he threw struck the family’s cat. When he arrived, a 13News Now crew was still there interviewing the family about what happened.

The delivery took place Sunday, Oct. 25, according to WAVY’s reporting. Owner Isabell Sump told the station that Opie, her 21-pound black cat, had been sunbathing on the front porch of her Virginia Beach, Virginia, home.

Sump said Opie was doing nothing to bother the driver. WAVY described Ring camera footage of a worker delivering for GOFO throwing a bagged package at the cat, then taking a photo of the delivery.

By the time the family spoke with 13News Now, they said their pet had been limping and was shaken after being struck. Their interview was nearly over when the driver approached and introduced himself as the man who had delivered the package.

Using a translation app, the driver explained that he had come to apologize in person. He said he did not like trouble and wanted to speak directly with the family about what had happened.

“Cats make me uneasy,” he said through the app.

A family member challenged his handling of both the animal and the delivery: “You shouldn’t be throwing packages in general, let alone at an animal.”

The family also questioned why he had not chosen another place to leave the package. During the exchange, a family member pointed out that he could have put it at the bottom of the steps, away from the cat.

At one point, the driver asked whether there was a way to resolve the matter. A family member also accused him of laughing and pointing at the cat after throwing the package.

More Than Words

In her separate interview with WAVY, Sump said GOFO had contacted her and told her it had opened an investigation into the driver’s conduct. She also said she wanted to pursue criminal charges once she learned who he was.

Police and animal control were called to the home during the encounter, which 13News Now covered. The station reported that officers made no arrests when they left.
