Taking your vehicle to a dealership for repairs can be stressful, especially when the service department hands you an estimate worth thousands of dollars. However, one Chevrolet Bolt owner recently discovered that an expensive charging-port replacement might have been completely unnecessary after a few Reddit users noticed something unusual in a photograph of the damaged component.
The owner took to Reddit’s r/BoltEV community on October 22 to explain what happened after their 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV developed problems with DC fast charging. According to the post, the electric vehicle had fewer than 50,000 miles on the odometer when a Chevrolet dealership diagnosed a charging fault and recommended replacing the entire charging receptacle.
Unfortunately, the proposed repair would have cost approximately $2,648, including taxes and fees, with the dealership charging another $219.90 just to diagnose the problem. The owner was particularly frustrated because they depended on public fast chargers to use the vehicle regularly and couldn’t afford such an expensive repair.
Rather than immediately approving the replacement, the owner shared a photograph of the charging port on Reddit, hoping other Chevrolet enthusiasts might have some advice. Surprisingly, several commenters noticed that what appeared to be a missing charging contact was actually an extra piece of metal stuck to another contact, potentially changing the situation entirely.

According to the Reddit post, the dealership diagnosed the Bolt with a P302F DC charging isolation fault and concluded that the charging receptacle needed to be replaced. However, after comparing photographs with other Bolt owners, the customer discovered that the right charging contact appeared normal while the left contact had an additional metal component attached to it.
Following suggestions from the community, the owner carefully removed the obstruction using pliers and was surprised by how easily it came loose. Even more remarkably, the Bolt immediately resumed DC fast charging at its usual speeds, successfully completing a charging session without interruptions and eventually charging beyond 80%.
The vehicle’s service warning light also disappeared without the owner manually clearing any diagnostic codes, while the myChevrolet app showed no remaining problems with the high-voltage battery. Although the owner plans to have the charging contacts professionally inspected for possible damage, they’ve already contacted GM Customer Assistance and dealership management to request a review of the original diagnosis and reimbursement of the $219.90 diagnostic fee.
Comments and Reactions to Chevrolet Bolt Owner’s $2,648 Repair Estimate
Several Reddit users were shocked that the dealership recommended replacing the entire charging receptacle when the problem appeared to involve a removable obstruction. One commenter wrote, “Right side looks normal, left side looks like something is stuck on the tip,” while another suggested that a gentle pull with pliers might save the owner more than $2,500.
Others criticized the dealership’s diagnosis, questioning how technicians could have overlooked something that Reddit users identified simply by examining a photograph. However, one participant offered another perspective, explaining that dealerships sometimes prefer replacing entire components rather than attempting smaller repairs because of the potential risks and warranty complications associated with electric vehicles.
Interestingly, some commenters suggested that the metal piece might have broken off another vehicle’s charging connector and become lodged inside the Bolt’s charging port during a previous session. Regardless of where the obstruction originated, the owner thanked the community for potentially saving thousands of dollars, turning what initially appeared to be an expensive mechanical failure into a reminder of how valuable a second opinion can be.
