When we think of Autumn, certain things come to mind: crisp weather, cozy sweaters, pumpkins galore, and leaves that turn to shades of red, orange, and gold. For many people, the fall season also means Autumn-themed traditions.
From pumpkin carving and apple picking to haunted trails and watching our favorite scary movies, there’s no shortage of fun.
However, while places like New England and the South feel appropriate for Fall activities, places like Southern California don’t typically come to mind. However, SoCal has more than expected.
Unexpected though it may seem, the Fall and Halloween season can be just as fun in the western United States. From cozy daytime outings for the whole family to scarier nighttime events, Los Angeles, San Diego, and the surrounding areas have numerous destinations to satisfy Autumn enthusiasts of all ages.
1. Julian

Charm personified, the little mountain town of Julian has an old-fashioned feel and every Fall activity one could ask for. Known especially for apple orchards, visitors can go apple picking at Apple Starr Orchard (perfect for kids with branches they can reach), Calico Ranch Orchard, Volcan Valley Apple Farm, or the Julian Farm and Orchard, which also has pumpkins, a petting zoo, and more.
Speaking of apples, a trip to Julian would be incomplete without stopping by the Julian Pie Company, the Julian Cider Mill, and the Julian Bakery Cafe for food and delectable treats. Julian also Fall events, including the Harvest Fest at the Julian Farm and Orchard and Autumn Jubilee at Fort Cross. The Harvest Fest features more than a pumpkin patch, including axe throwing, face painting, and more. The Jubilee includes a pumpkin patch, walking trails, a hayride, cider pressing, candle dipping, a treasure hunt, and more.
One of San Diego’s gems, Julian should be at the top of everyone’s Autumn list. The only downside is that with so much to do, you may need more than one day to see everything you want.
2. Tanaka Farms and the Irvine Park Railroad

Visiting a pumpkin patch is a must-do during the Fall, and Southern California has a surprising abundance of choices. Two of the finest are located in the Irvine area: Tanaka Farms and the Irvine Park Railroad.
Tanaka Farms is a multi-generational farm that began in the early 1900s. They pride themselves on sustainability, a friendly atmosphere, and daily harvested fruits and vegetables. During the Autumn, visitors flock to their beautiful pumpkin patch and enjoy wagon rides, games, the veggie patch, and the barnyard exhibit.
The Irvine Park Railroad remains a nostalgic jewel nestled amongst the oak trees in Irvine Park, and it’s a must-see destination anytime of year. The 12-minute train ride inspires smiles and glee from the young and young at heart. During the Fall, the pumpkin patch beckons with wagon rides and some of the best photo opportunities out there.
3. Riley’s Farm

Located in the foothills of Oak Glen, Riley’s Farm is a working farm and apple orchard that spans 360 acres across San Bernardino and Riverside. Any time of year promises a lovely experience, but Riley’s seasonal events exceed all expectations.
In the Autumn, Riley’s Farm presents The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Like entering the pages of the Washington Irving classic, guests will mingle with characters Ichabod Crane, Katrina Van Tassel, and Brom Bones, literally becoming part of the story, including the lurking, ominous presence of the Headless Horseman.
Guests are treated to a robust harvest meal of chicken or tri-tip, cornbread, baked beans, baked potatoes, a green salad, apple crisp, and, at an additional cost, fine ales and hard ciders. You can also enjoy a pie-eating contest, apple bobbing, pumpkin seed spitting, and pumpkin carving. For more details on this event, visit the official website.
4. Southern California Fall Foliage

What’s Autumn without beautiful fall foliage? Hilarious comedian Jim Gaffigan’s bit about foliage aside (if you know, you know), seeing leaves become hues of red, yellow, orange, and gold remains one of nature’s miracles- a true wonder to behold. However, Southern California doesn’t quite compete with the likes of Vermont, New Hampshire, and other New England states.
That being said, you can find some beautiful spots here and there throughout the region. Big Bear has an official Fall Colors Walking Tour, an expert-led two-hour, gorgeous “leaf-peeping” experience. Although the California Black Oak trees don’t change until late October and early November, when it happens, it’s absolutely lovely. The area is also a testament to the perseverance of nature after most of the forest was affected in 2003’s Cedar Fires.
Gold and yellow foliage abounds in Idyllwild, especially Mount Jacinto State Park. Likewise, all the fall colors are on display in Oak Glen by late October, with your best bets in the Oak Glen Preserve and Snowline Orchard.
5. Ghosts and Gravestones Tour

In San Diego, one of the spookiest offerings is the Ghosts and Gravestones Tour. Both a popular and yet underrated gem, on this tour passengers board the Trolley of the Doomed, hearing fascinating and scary stories about San Diego’s past.
The tour takes guests to the famous Whaley House, widely considered one of the most haunted places in the U.S. You’ll tour the grounds at night, which is genuinely eerie, though it might be precarious for those with balance or disorientation issues. You’ll also visit two cemeteries and learn about the history of those buried there.
For more information, visit the official website. Just note that this tour is rated PG-13 and not recommended for young children.
6. The Haunted Trail at Balboa Park

The Ghosts and Gravestones Tour is not the only spooky offering in San Diego. For an even more frightening experience, check out the Haunted Trail at Balboa Park. Rivaling the likes of Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights and Knott’s Scary Farm, the Haunted Trail was named in CNN’s Top 5 Best Haunted Attractions in America.
The 3,500-square-foot trail includes the eXperiment maze of horrors, including an Asylum of bleeding walls, a disorienting Vortex, a killer rabbit, and more. It doesn’t stop there, as you’ll be transported back to an Old West filled with zombies. All in all, the Haunted Trail is thrilling for those inclined but definitely not for the faint of heart. Check out SoCal Dad San Diego for a closer look.
7. Los Angeles Haunted Hayride

Considered one of the most iconic Los Angeles Halloween events, the Haunted Hayride takes guests to the fictional town of Midnight Falls, a full-blown campy scare fest with roaming actors, a hayride, games, live entertainment, themed mazes, and even a gift shop.
The 2026 mazes include the classic Elvira’s Trick or Treat Mayhem, the terrifying backwoods Hellbilly Halloween, and a new rock-and-roll-themed Fallen Angel maze. Visitors to the Griffith Park icon can also enjoy hot cider, axe throwing, escape games, and more. Tickets and information can be found on the official website.
8. Night of the Jack

When a Halloween event is beautiful, immersive, and family-friendly, it feels like you’ve hit the jackpot-pun intended. Hailed as “L.A.’s Premiere immersive experience,” Night of the Jack truly dazzles with pumpkins, light displays, food trucks, and a speakeasy.
The mile-long walking trail illuminates the night, thanks to thousands of jack-o’-lanterns, many with familiar characters, projection mapping, and light shows. There are also bouncy houses and face painting for kids. Indeed, while there are a few spooky elements, Night of the Jack aims for an event that all ages can love.
9. Apple Hill

Okay, so it’s technically cheating to include Apple Hill on this list, because it’s located in Northern California. Specifically, it’s located in Placerville in El Dorado County, between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. Despite technically being in a different part of California, its undeniable, wholesome charm makes it worthy of a spot on this list. Moreover, it’s the perfect destination for California residents looking for an autumn road trip.
In the Fall season, enjoy pumpkin patches, the apple harvest with yummy treats, train rides, museums, local crafts, and more. Check out Justin Scarred’s trip to Apple Hill for an in-depth exploration of what this lovely town has to offer.
10. Rooftop Cinema Club
