Charging an electric vehicle could soon take almost as little time as filling a conventional car with fuel. Chinese automaker BYD is preparing to bring its powerful Flash Charging technology to Europe on a much larger scale.

The company has announced plans to install thousands of ultra-fast charging stations across the continent by the end of 2027. Each charger can deliver up to 1,500 kW of power, greatly exceeding the output of most existing public EV chargers.

The expansion comes as BYD continues introducing new electric vehicles to European markets. Its latest battery technology promises dramatically shorter charging stops, although compatible vehicles are required to achieve the advertised speeds.

The ambitious rollout was outlined at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, where BYD also showcased new models equipped with the technology. If completed on schedule, the network could become an important selling point for the brand.

According to CarNewsChina, BYD intends to install 100 Flash Charging units across Europe by the end of 2026. That number is expected to increase to 3,000 by the end of the following year.

The company installed its first European Flash Charger in Germany in June 2026, with additional installations appearing in markets including the United Kingdom. BYD already operates more than 12,000 such chargers across China.

Its second-generation Blade Battery supports charging from 10 to 70 percent in approximately five minutes. Under suitable conditions, a compatible vehicle can reach 97 percent from 10 percent in just nine minutes.

The Atto 8 Will Bring Flash Charging To BYD’s SUV Lineup

The upcoming BYD Atto 8 will become the first BYD-branded model in Europe equipped with Flash Charging technology. Scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2027, the seven-seat electric SUV features a 115 kWh battery.

Its dual-motor powertrain produces 764 horsepower, while the claimed WLTP driving range reaches 653 kilometers (406 miles). The vehicle can also accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds.

BYD’s premium Denza Z9 GT already offers Flash Charging compatibility in Europe. Additional compatible models are expected to follow the Atto 8 during 2027.

An Ambitious Challenge For Europe’s Charging Network

BYD’s planned European installations represent half of its targeted 6,000 overseas Flash Charging stations by the end of 2027. However, delivering megawatt-level charging power requires substantial electrical infrastructure.

The rollout could help address concerns about lengthy charging stops, particularly for drivers covering long distances. Its success will depend on how quickly BYD can build the network and introduce vehicles capable of using its full potential.
