A Reddit user said they went in for an oil change and then had the shock of their lives when the car next to them suddenly bolted out of the shop. The dramatic dashcam footage showed it launching out of the shop and across a busy road.

Reddit user aemerson24 posted the video to the r/dashcams subreddit, and it already has 1,600 upvotes and 188 comments at the time of writing. Everything seems normal from the dashcam, then suddenly a worker scurries out of the way as a car bolts out of the shop.

The worker has no idea how to react or what to do, while another gets on the phone, presumably to the emergency services. There is a lot of bewilderment on the faces of those in the workshop, as they try to work out what had gone on.

Luckily for us, the Reddit user was able to work out exactly what had happened. While we won’t give it away just yet, the man in the car tried to blame the car and didn’t put it down to human error on his part. But not everyone on Reddit was convinced by that explanation.

What Happened in the Dashcam Video?

In the dashcam video itself, it looks normal at first before we hear “woah woah woah!” coming from the right side of the shop. It is then that what looks like a Honda launches out of the shop, through the parking lot, and through the bushes and past the trees in front of the parking spaces. A loud thud is heard as it launches itself out of the parking lot.

But the Honda doesn’t stop there. It carries on, leaping over the road and directly into what was a six-lane road in the middle of rush hour, with plenty of oncoming traffic in both directions, according to the Reddit user. You can only wince in horror as the sedan continues its seemingly uncontrolled journey, and more crunches and thuds are heard as it appears to make its way to the other side of the road.

We can just see it bounce over the road and into a parking lot on the other side. The workers at the shop are standing around in disbelief, with one getting on the phone, presumably to either emergency services or his boss to explain what has just happened. However, while it looked pretty scary, it appears that the man in the car, who happened to be its owner, is alright. But his explanation didn’t convince those on the Reddit thread.

Why Did the Car Jump Over the Road?

This is what aemerson24, the original poster who witnessed the event, had to say. “Yes, old guy, he said the accelerator got stuck. He went through the bay and across 6 lanes during rush hour without hitting anyone.” So the old guy in the car claimed that he had simply got the accelerator stuck somehow, and that launched him out of the workshop and directly onto a busy road. It must have been terrifying from inside the car.

But that explanation didn’t convince many people. “Accelerator got stuck” is Boomer for “I put my foot on the wrong pedal and, due to my advanced age, I didn’t realize it until much later,” said one user. “Brakes will overpower the engine in any modern, functioning vehicle. This excuse is, and always has been, geezer [expletive],” said another. Very few people seemed convinced that the driver had suffered a stuck throttle. Most just assumed they had got the brake and accelerator pedal confused and refused to admit what had gone wrong.
