A routine drive through El Paso County took a disturbing turn when sheriff’s deputies witnessed a German Shepherd puppy fall from the bed of a moving pickup truck and slam onto the roadway.
The puppy had been riding unsecured in the bed of a Chevrolet Silverado when it fell from the vehicle while it was traveling along South Darrington Road.
Deputies immediately stopped to help after seeing the animal hit the pavement and the concrete sidewalk.
The incident prompted an animal cruelty investigation and resulted in the arrest of the pickup truck’s driver.
Puppy Falls From Moving Truck
The incident occurred on October 3, 2026, in the 400 block of South Darrington Road.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, deputies saw the German Shepherd puppy being transported unsecured in the truck bed as the Silverado traveled northbound.
While the vehicle was moving, the puppy fell from the bed and struck the roadway before hitting the concrete sidewalk. Deputies stopped to assist the animal, which showed visible injuries and signs of pain following the impact.
Driver Arrested
The driver was identified as 64-year-old Victor Martinez. Following the investigation, he was arrested and charged with Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals.

Don’t Forget: Animals Depend on Their Owners
El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte emphasized the responsibility people have when transporting animals: “Animals depend on us for their safety and protection, and that responsibility should never be taken lightly.”
Ugarte reiterated that animals cannot speak for themselves or protect themselves from dangerous situations.
He added that when deputies see an animal being placed at risk, they will take action and hold those responsible accountable.
It’s important to take appropriate precautions when traveling with animals. Pets should be properly secured and transported to protect them from injury or unnecessary suffering.
An unsecured animal in the bed of a moving pickup truck is at risk of falling, being struck by traffic, or sustaining other injuries.
The sheriff’s office said it remains committed to investigating animal cruelty and protecting animals throughout El Paso County.
People Hope Puppy Is Safe
The incident has also prompted anger and concern among people discussing the case on Facebook.
Many people have expressed frustration over the circumstances that left the puppy unsecured in the moving truck, while others have focused on what happened to the animal after the fall.
The biggest concern is whether the German Shepherd puppy is now receiving the care it needs. People have also expressed hope that the injured puppy is being properly cared for and will recover from the ordeal.
The sheriff’s office has not provided further details about the puppy’s condition in its statement, so the puppy’s current health and recovery remain unclear.
Guessing Headlights hopes the dog makes a full recovery and is in a safe, loving home.
