An interesting Reddit post recently cropped up and went viral. It consisted of four epic Japanese sports cars and it posed an interesting question. Which of the four cars would you choose, and why? As with many questions about cars, it caused plenty of debate.
The original post was posted to the r/Autos SubReddit by corpsman86satx. In the images posted, we can see a modern Toyota Supra, a Mitsubishi Evo, a classic Toyota Supra, and a 1998 Honda Civic Type R. Four superb Japanese sports cars.
Thankfully, the comments section on this Reddit post did not descend into anarchy and abuse. Plenty of opinions were shared by fellow users, but it was all done amicably, with no insults hurled at others. It did highlight the difficult choices people would have to make, as all four cars are excellent.
In the end, it all comes down to personal taste. While the modern Supra would be the fastest and probably most comfortable, would it be too boring? The Civic Type R, meanwhile, feels almost like a sleeper, just sitting in the corner, yet it could be the best choice.
Choosing Between the Cars Was Never Going To Be Easy
There was a lot of love for the Toyota Supras in the comments section. It is easy to see why, too. The original Supra was produced from the late 1970s to the late 1990s, with fourth-generation production stopping by 2002. A fifth-generation model emerged in 2019, co-developed alongside the BMW Z4. Despite fears over its BMW connections, the new Supra has been a massive hit.
Alongside the modern Supra, we can also see a fourth-generation Supra in the photos. Toyota produced the fourth-generation model from 1993 to 2002, with the final model year being 2002. Power came from either a naturally aspirated inline-six engine or a twin-turbocharged inline-six engine. A few people on Reddit expressed love for this Supra, but the 1998 Civic Type R also gained plenty of admirers.
“I’m a Honda fanboy; Civic for me. They all look super clean,” said user kyledye25. “Civic. I’d only want to drive on backroads anyway, and of the 4, the Civic does that with more engagement than the other 3. Can the other 3 be more visceral with turbos and faster? Probably, but I doubt the steering feel will be more direct than a well-maintained Civic hatch,” said another user. It is by far the smallest of the quartet, and might even be the most enjoyable of the four to drive.
The Mitsubishi Also Had a Few Admirers
A few people in the comments seemed quite taken by the Mitsubishi Evo. “Something about this generation of EVO just does it for me. They look so different from other cars, yet not too out there. It also is depressing when you see what Mitsubishi has become,” said one user. Mitsubishi has, of course, not made the Evo for many years now, and the company itself does feel like a shadow of what it used to be. An Evo lets drivers relive the manufacturer’s glory days.
Arguably, the most boring of the four is the modern Supra. Sure, it is likely to be comfy, the best to drive daily, and it will have all the modern conveniences you’d expect. And we know it is a very good car; make no mistake about that. But compared to the others on offer, it probably lacks just that little bit of an extra special feeling.
