A California Highway Patrol officer stopped a Dodge Durango in Merced County for what CHP described as multiple traffic violations. It did not remain an ordinary traffic stop for long.
The Central Division canine officer noticed what CHP called indicators of possible criminal activity after stopping the 2026 Durango on Sept. 10.
That brought K-9 Shei into the stop. The dog alerted to the odor of narcotics while being deployed around the vehicle, according to a California Highway Patrol post.
What officers reported finding next weighed about 100 pounds.

CHP said Shei’s alert led to a probable-cause search of the Durango.
Inside, officers found approximately 100 pounds of crystal methamphetamine. CHP estimated its street value at $1,362,000.
Photos released with the agency’s account show Shei beside packages CHP identified as the seized methamphetamine.
Into Custody
The driver was taken into custody and later booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of possessing and transporting methamphetamine for sale.
The Los Banos Enterprise reported that CHP’s publicly released information did not identify the driver.
CHP has not publicly detailed which traffic violations prompted the original stop.
