Reports from Japan have suggested that a very special 2027 Honda Civic Type R is on the way, straight from the workshop of the Honda Racing Corporation (HRC). This is rumored to be built from a facelifted FL5, blending Taikyu racing hardware with everything needed to make it a road-legal car.
Japanese publication Response has said that the concept shown off at the Tokyo Auto Salon could be on for a 2027 production date, giving us one of the coolest versions of the Type R we have ever laid eyes on.
Even though official confirmation is yet to come from Honda and HRC, Japanese outlets have already begun sketching out the design of the car. In particular, some reports describe something quite wild, taking the Type R to levels we haven’t seen before.
If the reports prove correct, the new Type R HRC will launch in 2027, on a facelifted FL5 Civic Type R model that Honda is set to reveal towards the end of 2026. Such a model would pick up some serious hardware from HRC, which is the racing arm of Honda responsible for its global racing efforts.
This Is What We Know About the 2027 HRC Civic Type R
HRC is the racing arm of Honda, responsible for its programs in Formula 1, MotoGP, and Super GT, while it also has a division running the IndyCar program in the United States. The rumored HRC Civic Type R is set to launch on the facelifted FL5 model coming at the end of 2026. But this upcoming model will offer more than just a few cosmetic upgrades.
If the reports are true, HRC is focusing on something that offers tangible performance gains thanks to competition-grade parts, rather than a regular cosmetic package. Type R development boss Hideki Kakinuma has reportedly ensured the focus of the project is on more ‘balanced’ gains. In other words, the new car isn’t chasing after a single, eye-catching Nürburgring lap time like many other special editions. Honda is looking for gains across the board and to improve the overall feel of the car.
HRC and Honda did show off a concept model at the recent Tokyo Auto Salon. This car is apparently serving as a rolling test car in a Japanese endurance series. It is testing aerodynamic components as well as new engine parts that could make their way into the road-going version of the Civic Type R. It must be stressed, however, that none of this is official. For now, reports of a radically overhauled HRC version of the Civic Type R are just rumors.
The Clues We Got From the HRC Concept
While it’s not totally indicative of the potential real model, the concept car has given us an idea of what to expect. A larger front intake is immediately apparent, as are twin air guides, an extended lip spoiler, and much bigger rear wing endplates. We can also see a chunkier diffuser and an HRD-branded radiator behind the lower grille, and all of these changes make for an incredibly aggressive machine. The regular Type R is already aggressive, but these changes take it a step further.
Under the skin, it is reported that the car will have larger brakes, forged wheels, new suspension tuning, and extra carbon fiber dotted across it. Weight should come down by about 50lbs compared to the standard car. The 2.0-liter inline-four engine could be due for an upgrade, up from the 315hp it makes in the United States to 335hp thanks to software and intake and exhaust modifications. If it does go on sale, the car is expected to have a premium of $5,000 compared to the regular Type R.
