A fiery three-vehicle crash in Shawnee, Kansas, left one vehicle engulfed in flames and sent emergency crews rushing to the scene. Despite how dramatic the wreck looked, officials say the people involved escaped without any serious injuries.
The Shawnee Fire Department said firefighters, police officers, and Johnson County MED-ACT responded to the crash near Midland Drive and Lackman Road at around 3:20 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they found one of the vehicles already heavily involved in fire.
Crews were able to extinguish the flames while emergency personnel evaluated those involved in the collision. Two patients were found to have suffered minor injuries, but neither required transportation to a hospital.
Officials have not yet said what caused the three vehicles to collide or why one subsequently caught fire. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, leaving locals with plenty of questions after seeing footage of the badly burned vehicle.
Firefighters Battle Flames
Please give the following video a second to load up completely.
The clip appears to be from a body camera and shows an intersection with a fire rescue vehicle parked in the center. In the distance, a black car is burning rapidly.
As the firefighter gets closer to the vehicle, the hood appears to have melted off, along with other parts of the frame. To best take control of the situation, the firefighter sprays water directly into the vehicle’s engine and throughout the interior.
After some time, a few firefighters managed to put out the blaze and prevent further destruction. Fortunately, only two people sustained injuries that were so minor that they didn’t require transport.
Commenters Were Relieved
Considering how badly one vehicle was burned, most commenters were simply relieved to hear nobody was seriously hurt. “Glad everyone is OK!” one person wrote while praising the responding police and firefighters, while another said they had driven past the scene and were “praying everyone was safe!”
Others were more curious about how the vehicle ended up catching fire in the first place, with one viewer asking, “Electric car?” after calling the fire strange. Another local cautioned drivers about the broader area, saying they had previously seen several motorists run red lights and stop signs around Midland Drive and Blackfish Parkway. However, there is currently no indication of what happened in this crash.
A few people also found room for humor after learning the injuries were minor, with one person looking at the burned-out vehicle and joking, “We can rebuild it. We have the technology.” Others focused on the responders themselves, thanking the Shawnee Fire Department and praising the crews for their work at the scene.
