Czinger Is Going After the Nürburgring Production-Car Record

Los Angeles-based company Czinger recently took the covers off the incredible Czinger 21C, an unreal-looking hypercar that was one of the stars of Monterey Car Week. The show would not be complete without one of LA’s automakers taking the covers off a new car.

The 21C Spyder is a wild-looking machine, and it certainly sounds like it will have the performance you’d expect from a car with the hypercar tag. However, it is the comments from the founder and CEO of the company, Lukas Czinger, that raised the most eyebrows.

The hypercar, which has already set records around Laguna Seca and Circuit of the Americas, now has the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in its sights. In fact, the company has said that the iconic German racetrack is a clear target for the car as it looks to show the world just how fast it is.

But Czinger isn’t going to be content with simply turning up to the track and driving around. They are aiming for the Nürburgring Nordschleife production record, which is currently held by the Mercedes-AMG ONE, but there is no formal attempt for the hypercar booked in just yet.

How Powerful Is the Czinger 21C?

The company revealed both the Spyder and the hard-top version of the hypercar at Monterey Car Week. Under the hood of the hypercar is an incredible twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V8 engine, paired with three electric motors. Czinger has said the car can produce a whopping 1,250hp. Producing over 1,000hp seems to be all the rage with modern production hypercars and supercars.

During Czinger’s “California Gold Rush”, one of the cars set production-car records at five different race circuits, all while driving on public roads in between each of its record runs. That alone is impressive, as it showed the car was perfectly happy to pound around a racetrack and then head off down public roads to get to its next destination.

We also saw the 21C take on the Goodwood Festival of Speed hillclimb and put in some pretty wild times at the British venue. Plus, it’s a car that now holds the production car records around both Laguna Seca and Circuit of the Americas. These are two of America’s best-ever racetracks, and two of the biggest challenges for any car and driver. So for the 21C to walk up to those racetracks and blitz the records in the manner it did is incredibly impressive.

When Will the Czinger Take on the Nürburgring Nordschleife?

With the Spyder, CEO Lukas Czinger said that the car will be used for record attempts. “We could set some open-top records, but I think we could take some all-out records as well,” he said during Monterey Car Week. But it is the fearsome Nürburgring Nordschleife that the team currently has its eyes set on. The car has already run at the German track, but not with the intention to break records.

“I think, obviously, Nürburgring in Germany—we picked up some data there,” said Czinger. Referencing a record attempt, Czinger expanded on the chances the company had. “But we were able to run a couple fast sections and look at our sims and say, ‘Hey, if we extrapolated that to [a] full lap, how are we doing?’ And the short answer is … we’ve definitely got a chance, and we’d like to take it.” At the time of writing, Czinger predicted it could be at least a year before they take on the Nordschleife. But when it does, it could be spectacular.
