Teen Arrested For Doing Donuts In U-Haul Pickup… Then Police Found His Mustang Videos

Renting a U-Haul pickup and immediately using it for a street takeover is already a questionable plan. According to San Diego police, however, one 18-year-old driver allegedly managed to turn that stunt into the starting point of a much larger investigation.

Police say the teenager was caught doing donuts and burnouts in a rented U-Haul pickup at an intersection in San Diego’s Scripps Ranch neighborhood. The spinning Chevrolet Silverado apparently left enough damage behind that the city estimated roadway repairs at $5,153.

The arrest might have ended as another bizarre sideshow story, except investigators say the suspect was already on their radar. Authorities subsequently connected him to online videos allegedly documenting other dangerous driving incidents around San Diego, including footage involving a Ford Mustang weaving through freeway traffic.

One of those clips appears to show the Mustang traveling along the painted divider between lanes and squeezing through narrow gaps between other vehicles at speed. Police referred to the behavior as “white lining” (some call it “swimming”), and investigators now say several previous incidents connected with the suspect are under investigation.

According to the San Diego Police Department, officers encountered the U-Haul participating in a sideshow on August 8 near Scripps Ranch Court and Scripps Ranch Boulevard. Police footage shows the unmistakably branded white rental pickup spinning around the intersection as spectators watch from nearby.

The teenager was subsequently arrested and booked into San Diego County Central Jail. Police listed charges including felony vandalism, exhibition of speed, and reckless driving.

There is some uncertainty surrounding exactly how those charges are classified. Police footage describes the arrest as involving “three felony charges,” while the department’s written account specifically identifies the vandalism allegation as a felony, so the precise charging details remain unclear without court documents.

What isn’t ambiguous is the alleged damage. Police put the repair estimate for the roadway at $5,153, making those rental-truck donuts considerably more expensive than a ruined set of rear tires.

Then Police Started Looking At His Videos

Investigators say the U-Haul incident wasn’t their first encounter with the teenager’s alleged driving exploits. Police claim he had posted videos online showing participation in other sideshows and speed contests around San Diego.

The most alarming footage released by authorities appears to involve a Ford Mustang on a busy freeway. The car can be seen rapidly threading between vehicles while effectively straddling the lane divider, leaving surrounding motorists little room to react.

Police describe the maneuver as “white lining.” Unlike ordinary lane changes, the footage shows the Mustang deliberately exploiting the narrow space between streams of traffic while maintaining significant speed.

More Charges Could Be Coming

San Diego police say they have now linked the suspect to several previous incidents, and that means the U-Haul arrest may ultimately result in additional allegations as investigators work through the earlier footage and determine what can be tied to the teenager.

Authorities haven’t detailed every incident they’re examining or announced what further charges could result. For now, the allegations connected with the rental truck remain the immediate focus of the case.

There is also a fairly obvious lesson for anyone tempted to film reckless driving for an online audience. A video that attracts attention on social media can attract attention from investigators too, particularly when it provides them with footage of the car, location, driving behavior, and potentially the person responsible.

The U-Haul stunt may have been what resulted in the teenager’s arrest, but according to police, his own collection of Mustang videos could prove far harder to drive away from.
