A Maryland state senator is facing pointed questions after a bizarre parking incident in Annapolis left his SUV partly on a sidewalk and up against a tree, and residents are asking whether his position in government kept him out of trouble that an average driver might not have avoided.
According to Fox Baltimore’s “Spotlight on Maryland,” witnesses say a black Land Rover Defender struck a parked car’s side mirror on Severn Avenue Monday night before the driver continued on without stopping. The vehicle, registered to State Senator C. Anthony Muse, was later caught on surveillance video taking nearly five minutes to maneuver into a parking spot near Ruth’s Chris Steak House in the Eastport neighborhood, ending up perpendicular to the curb and partially on the sidewalk.
Parking enforcement eventually showed up and issued a $100 citation. Annapolis police also visited the restaurant looking for Muse, according to workers who spoke to Fox Baltimore anonymously, and said the senator has a history of leaving the establishment without paying his tab. Muse later addressed that claim directly, saying he simply forgot his credit card on the final day of the legislative session and has since settled up.
Muse, who has served in the Maryland Senate on and off since the 1990s and is also a longtime church minister, broke his silence after two days of questions. He described the incident as “a relatively minor” mirror-to-mirror bump, not a hit and run, and he was back in the Senate chamber for votes the very next day. He did not answer whether he had been drinking that night or whether he faces any pending charges.
Residents Want Answers, Not Excuses
Folks in Eastport aren’t exactly thrilled with how this played out. Several told Fox Baltimore that if a regular citizen had done the same thing, hitting a car and driving off before struggling to park for five minutes, they’d likely be facing consequences a lot faster than a modest parking ticket.
It’s a fair question. When cameras catch this much confusion behind the wheel, people naturally want to know why a full investigation didn’t follow.
A Five-Minute Parking Job Nobody Will Forget
Let’s be honest, we’ve all had our rough moments parallel parking, especially if the spot is tight. But five minutes of maneuvering that ends with the vehicle up on a sidewalk and against a tree is a parking story for the ages.
Add in an unexplained hour-long disappearance and a mystery man driving the SUV away later, and you’ve got the kind of night that would make anyone raise an eyebrow.
Misunderstanding?
Public officials should be held to the same standard as everyone else, no more and no less. Senator Muse says this was all a misunderstanding, and he may be telling the truth.
But when a state senator’s fender bender turns into a five-minute parking ordeal followed by silence, it’s reasonable for constituents to want a straight answer.
