I will always love a good suspect story told by a cop. Police officers have seen things that you could only imagine, both in the realms of horrific and absolutely puzzling.
Wyoming Sheriff Brian Kozak of the Laramie County Sheriff’s Department took to Facebook to share one of the stranger stories I’ve heard: a suspect running from police after being a part of a car crash and trying to break into a jail as a result.
What’s even wilder is that it’s the very same jail the suspect was booked into when he was eventually arrested. At least he didn’t have to walk very far.
Sheriff Kozak details the strange incident while inside his police vehicle at night, starting things strong with, “You ever wonder what happened to that kid that always lost at hide-and-seek? I think he’s in our jail.”
Turns Out, Police Were Already Looking for Him
He explains that early on August 6, the people working at the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office noticed someone trying all the exterior doors on one side of the building. ” He was wiggling the doors and trying to get into the jail,” he said.
Because cameras were installed throughout the property, the deputies inside were alerted to speak with the gentleman, who then tried to hide. He was quickly found just outside the entrance area where officers drive suspects in to book them.
After a brief investigation, it was determined that the suspect had just fled the scene of a car accident, and officers were actively searching for him. At this point, they arrested him.
I guess he didn’t need to go very far in the end.
Sheriff Kozak says that he thinks the suspect was confused by the “flashing vacancy sign and thought that maybe it was a hotel. But it wasn’t. However, he did find out that the vacancy thing, that’s legit. So, he’s in our jail.
Commenters Can’t Believe the Suspect Basically Delivered Himself
The story gave plenty of commenters a laugh, with many amused by the suspect apparently making law enforcement’s job considerably easier. One person summed it up perfectly by writing, “You gotta like it when they deliver themselves,” while another simply said, “You can’t make this stuff up.”
Others shared stories of similarly questionable decisions they’d encountered over the years. One commenter recalled an escaped inmate who unknowingly hitchhiked with a sheriff driving an unmarked car and ended up getting a ride straight back to jail, while another remembered a woman allegedly trying to dig her way into a Colorado jail with a spoon.
Plenty of people also praised deputies and the sheriff’s office for sharing the unusual story with some humor. One called it a “nice laugh” to start the day, while another wrote, “This is hilarious! Great job, deputies.”
