Traffic camera footage released by the Sarasota Police Department showed the moment a driver ran through a red light before causing a violent head-on collision at a Sarasota intersection on July 26.
The video shows a black sedan entering the intersection after the traffic signal had turned red. Moments later, a blue vehicle traveling through the intersection on a green light struck the sedan, sending it across multiple lanes of traffic before it crashed into a street sign, knocking it to the ground.
Police shared the footage on Aug. 6 as a reminder of the dangers associated with running red lights.
Police Use Video To Highlight Intersection Safety
While authorities did not release additional information about those involved in the crash, the department said the footage demonstrates how quickly a traffic violation can escalate into a serious collision.
Sarasota Police called on drivers to come to a complete stop at every red light and remain alert when approaching signalized intersections. The department regularly shares traffic safety reminders and uses red-light camera footage to encourage safer driving habits.
The Repercussions of Driving Through a Red Light
Officials remind motorists that red-light camera systems are used to document vehicles that enter intersections after the traffic signal turns red. Under Florida’s Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Program, a notice of violation may be issued to the registered owner of a vehicle captured running a red light.
Drivers who fail to respond to an initial notice can face additional penalties, including a higher fine and a uniform traffic citation, depending on the circumstances. The department says the program is intended to improve intersection safety by encouraging compliance with traffic signals.
Red-Light Crashes Remain a Serious Safety Concern
The crash comes as law enforcement agencies across the country continue emphasizing the importance of stopping at red lights. During National Stop on Red Week, other police departments have highlighted that more than 1,100 people were killed and more than 141,000 were injured in crashes involving red-light running in the United States in 2024.
Officials say many of these collisions occur at intersections and are preventable when drivers obey traffic signals, remain attentive behind the wheel, and avoid distractions that can delay reaction times.
A few moments of patience at an intersection can help prevent serious crashes and protect everyone on the road.
“Stop on red every time,” said Sarasota Police on its official Facebook page, saying that no distraction or appointment is worth risking lives.
