Sometimes the smallest thing on your car gives you away. A blown tail light bulb, a dark license plate lamp, one of those little details most drivers forget about until a cop pulls up behind them. That is exactly what happened to a Hillsborough County, Florida driver last week, and it turned into one of the more tangled traffic stops we have covered in a while.
Deputies noticed the rear lights were out on a vehicle driving through the area and pulled the car over, a completely routine stop that happens thousands of times a day across the country. What followed was anything but routine, showed the New York Post’s viral post. The woman behind the wheel told the deputy her boyfriend was supposed to meet her to pick up the car, since it was apparently a rental in his name. She said she had a license, just not with her at the moment.
From there the story only got murkier. She gave her name as Brianna, said she was from New York but visiting friends in Florida while staying at an Airbnb. The problem was she had no New York identification of any kind, and when the deputy pressed her on it, her answers started contradicting each other. She said she was not born in New York but currently lived there. She also admitted she had never actually held a valid driver’s license, and there was nothing in the vehicle with her real name on it.
Once a second deputy arrived and started checking the documents she did have, things fell apart fast. Every ID in her possession turned out to be fake, and deputies ultimately found a total of twelve different driver’s licenses in the car, each one carrying her photo but paired with a different name and birth date. That is not a fender bender level of trouble, that is a full identity fraud investigation.
A Rental Car and a Rear Light Bulb Started It All
It is worth pointing out how often these bigger stories start with something as unglamorous as a burned out bulb. Cops are not psychic, they cannot see twelve fake IDs sitting in your glovebox from the road. They see a tail light that is not working and they pull you over to let you know.
Most of the time that stop ends with a warning and you are on your way. This time it unraveled into something much bigger, and it is a good reminder to actually check your lights before a road trip, rental car or not.
The Story That Would Not Add Up
Every answer she gave seemed to create two new questions. No license, no New York ID, a boyfriend who never showed, and a rental car she was not on the paperwork for.
Deputies clearly picked up on the inconsistencies quickly, and it did not take long for the conversation to shift from a lights violation to something far more serious.
Identity Fraud Charges and an ICE Hold
Investigators later identified the woman as 28 year old Bryce Swanson, a Canadian national who had overstayed her visa in the United States. She now faces charges including fraudulent use of personal information involving multiple victims, driving without a valid license, and providing a false name to law enforcement.
She was booked into the Orient Road Jail and is being held without bond due to an ICE hold.
It is a strange one. A dozen identities in a single glovebox is not something deputies run into every day, and it all traces back to a couple of dim bulbs on the back of a rental car.
