There are plenty of reasons you might run into deputies investigating a possible wildfire. Getting arrested for felony DUI while driving through the same area probably isn’t one of them.
That’s exactly what happened in Summit County, Colorado, where deputies responding to a report of a potential wildfire made an entirely different kind of discovery.
In a Facebook post written by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were patrolling Swan Mountain Road on Tuesday night when they encountered a driver traveling on the closed roadway. What started as a routine contact quickly turned into an arrest after deputies determined the man was driving under the influence.
Officials say the driver was booked into jail on charges including felony DUI, driving with a revoked license, driving without insurance, and driving on a closed road. In Colorado, a fourth or subsequent DUI offense can be charged as a felony, making the encounter far more serious than anyone likely expected at the start of the night.
Deputies Listed a Long String of Violations

The video is more of a rundown of everything the rider did wrong. Honestly, he likely deserves it considering the state he was in when officers finally caught up to him on the closed Swan Mountain Road.
The officer can be heard saying, “From where we are right now, we have you driving an unregistered dirt bike on a closed road, and I’m not just saying closed; there’s what, four signs that say ‘Closed Road’ down there? You smell like alcohol, you have a revoked driver’s license, and you’re unwilling to even try to prove that you’re sober.”
It didn’t take long for the officers to simply ask the rider to turn around and put his hands behind his back. There’s no way he didn’t think he was going to jail.

Commenters poked fun at the situation, with one person writing, “That was just an average day in the ’90s in Breckenridge…” Similarly, another user wrote, “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”
Others were curious if the rider had anything to do with the fires that were being investigated, with someone writing, “Did he start the fire or a suspect? I’m suspicious!”
