Early Sunday morning, a routine traffic stop attempt on Chicago’s Southwest Side turned into a tragedy that no one wanted to see coming. What started as a call about someone allegedly pointing a gun from a vehicle ended with three people dead and a fourth fighting for her life after their car left the roadway and crashed into a train box car.
For those of us who spend our weekends under the hood or behind the wheel of something we actually enjoy driving, stories like this hit differently. Cars are meant to be a source of freedom and fun, not a tool for outrunning trouble. And unfortunately, this situation reminds us just how quickly a bad decision behind the wheel can turn deadly, not just for the people involved, but for anyone who happens to be nearby.
According to WGN 9, officers first got a call about a person who had pointed a gun at someone from a vehicle. When officers found a car matching the description and tried to pull it over, the driver refused to stop. A short pursuit followed before officers called it off. Not long after, Illinois State Police troopers spotted the same vehicle and attempted their own stop in the 5500 block of South Cicero Avenue.
The driver actually did stop briefly for the troopers, which makes what happened next even more frustrating to think about. Rather than sticking around, the driver took off again, prompting Chicago police to jump back in to assist. That decision to run a second time is ultimately what led to the fatal outcome just blocks away.
How the Chase Ended
As the vehicle sped away from troopers along South Cicero Avenue, it left the roadway near the 6900 block, right around where Chicago borders Bedford Park, and slammed into a train box car at approximately 2:15 a.m.
The area sits just blocks from Midway International Airport and is crossed by several active freight lines, making it an especially unforgiving place for a high-speed loss of control.
Who Was Involved
Two men and a woman riding in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth occupant, another woman, was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition after suffering serious trauma.
As of this writing, authorities have not released the identities of those killed, and no other injuries were reported in connection with the crash.
The Investigation Continues
Chicago police, working alongside Illinois State Police, are still piecing together exactly what happened in the moments before impact.
No arrests related to the original gun complaint have been announced, and detectives continue to investigate.

There’s no dressing this up. A police chase that ends with a train car involved is about as bad an outcome as you can get, and it’s a sobering reminder that fleeing rarely, if ever, works out better than pulling over.
Whatever led to that initial call, three families are now dealing with a loss that didn’t have to happen.
