Hundreds of teenagers taking over the streets of downtown Orlando on e-bikes raised serious safety concerns as they swarmed the roads and allegedly engaged in multiple illegal activities.
Had they simply followed traffic laws, the gathering might not have attracted as much attention. Instead, many riders were seen weaving through traffic, running red lights, and repeatedly disrupting the flow of vehicles, showing little regard for the rules of the road.
The Orlando Police Department shared a video on social media showing the group riding recklessly. In one instance, the riders even blocked an ambulance trying to get through. The video stitches together multiple clips showing the riders committing various traffic violations.
Police eventually stepped in and arrested several riders. Footage also showed a bike-mounted officer quickly catching up to and arresting two e-bike riders within seconds.
Orlando Police Department’s Video Highlights Disregard for the Law by Young Riders
Footage shared by the Orlando Police Department on Facebook appears to have been recorded on July 18. It begins by showing a large group of riders blocking traffic at an intersection, making it difficult for motorists to get through.
The next clip shows several riders performing wheelies as they pass through another intersection. Despite the traffic signal turning red, many continued riding through it without stopping.
In another scene, an ambulance responding to an emergency is forced to stop after the riders fail to yield and continue crossing the intersection. A police SUV directly behind the ambulance witnesses the incident.
The situation becomes increasingly chaotic as officers move in to stop the riders, with several being arrested. One officer, riding a police bicycle, is seen entering the group before quickly catching and arresting two e-bike riders while dozens of others continue past and several watch from a distance.
While it is not known how many riders the Orlando Police Department arrested, the video caption has a message for those creating trouble. It reads:
“Downtown Orlando is for everyone to enjoy, including kids and families. Come out, have fun, and make good memories, but not like this.
“Reckless riding, running red lights, blocking traffic, and blocking an ambulance and other emergency vehicles from responding puts everyone at risk, including the riders themselves. This type of dangerous behavior will not be tolerated.
“Orlando Police officers will continue enforcing the law to help keep Downtown safe for everyone.”
E-Bikes Were Confiscated and Towed
According to a report by FOX 35 Orlando, several kids were detained, issued criminal citations, and had some of their e-bikes confiscated and towed after police determined they were not properly registered under state law.
The detained riders were later released to their parents or guardians. Police said hundreds of teenagers took part in the gathering but did not disclose how many were detained, how many received citations, or how many e-bikes were towed.
A police spokesperson said:
“Because of the size and mobility of the group, not every rider was immediately apprehended. However, officers took enforcement action when it could be done safely.”
