Woman Pumps Gas at 7-Eleven, Watches the Price Climb While Nothing Comes Out

There have been instances in the past where a fuel nozzle wouldn’t dispense gas into a vehicle, but the meter kept running, charging the customer for fuel they never received.

A similar incident has surfaced on social media, showing a woman at a 7-Eleven gas station who realized no fuel was entering her vehicle’s gas tank while filling up.

Meanwhile, the meter showed the amount of fuel supposedly being dispensed, and the price continued to climb.

Naturally, any customer would be furious if that happened to them and would likely assume they had been scammed. But is that really the case?

“No Gas Coming Out of Here”

A video posted by Wall Street Apes on X shows a fuel nozzle sitting outside the car without dispensing any fuel. However, the camera then panned to the meter, which was still climbing.

A woman present at the scene said there was “no gas coming out of here, still being charged.” A man, who appears to be the pump attendant, said, “I’m sorry, it is not my issue,” but the woman insisted that there was clearly a problem.

It is obvious that pumps do not normally function this way, and that something was clearly wrong at this 7-Eleven gas station. Rather than a scam, this could be an issue known as meter creep, as suggested in the video.

The location and timing of the incident are unknown. It is also unclear whether the customer ended up paying for fuel that was never dispensed or whether 7-Eleven resolved the issue.

What Is Meter Creep?

The issue may be related to a phenomenon known as “meter creep,” where a mechanical fault causes the pump’s meter to continue registering fuel even though the nozzle is closed.

The problem is commonly linked to maintenance-related issues, such as a leaking belly valve or air trapped in the fuel lines, which can cause the meter to record movement without fuel being dispensed.

According to a Motor1 report that covered a similar issue, meter creep is the result of aging equipment or malfunctions often related to improper maintenance.

Meter creep can be dealt with through routine maintenance of fuel pumps. Clearing nozzles and valves of debris and fuel residue can help ensure a smooth, error-free operation.

Anyone who encounters a meter creep issue should report it to the local weights and measures department. Its inspectors are in charge of routinely checking pumps at gas stations within their work areas.
