A man in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is facing multiple charges after he allegedly crashed into a home and later attempted to flee the scene. Neighbors, however, saw his attempt and reportedly chased him down and successfully detained him until police arrived.
As reported by KKTV, citing the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), the incident occurred on Monday, June 6. At around 10:45 p.m., officers responded to a home located along Palm Drive near Union Boulevard and Austin Bluffs Parkway.
The CSPD was informed that a driver had crashed into a home. Reportedly, people were inside the residence at the time, but fortunately, no one was injured.
Footage shared by KKTV showed the vehicle penetrating through one of the house’s walls. The house sustained significant damage as a result, including destroyed beams that were later replaced by the Colorado Springs Fire Department, which also responded to the scene.
Driver Detained
As the residents managed to exit their home safely, they came across a particular situation. The driver, then identified as George Carroll III, was detained, but not by the police officers.
KRDO talked with many neighbors present at the time of the crash. One of them, Parker Humphrey, was walking his dog alongside his wife when they saw the crash. However, he soon noticed that the man behind the wheel, Carroll, was attempting to leave the area.
“I ran with him with a couple other great neighbors, who kind of just ran with him,” Humphrey told the outlet. “We didn’t really grab him or anything. We just kind of talked to him and told him to stop and try to take a breath, and eventually he stopped, and the cops came, and it was great for us.”
Worried Neighbors
Other neighbors also witnessed the incident and were startled by the initial impact. One of them, Mike Heritage, said that it sounded like an explosion. He arrived at the aforementioned home and managed to talk to one of those inside the house at the time of the crash.
“He said he was downstairs and that he heard the crash come in and the car came within ten feet of him,” Heritage said. “And I said, ‘You’re lucky to be alive.'”
Tim Terry, another neighbor, expressed his concern regarding a sharp turn leading to their neighborhood. According to him, several accidents had ocurred in the past.
Suspect Arrested
Officers made it to the scene and placed Carroll under arrest. Immediately, they took notice of various unspecified impairment signs, the CSPD said.
George Carroll III is now facing multiple charges, including DUI and other traffic-related offenses. Meanwhile, police shared a statement with KRDO, in which they asked witnesses to refrain from becoming direct participants when witnessing incidents of the kind.
“Approaching or attempting to detain a suspect can place themselves and others at unnecessary risk, and responding officers may not immediately know who is involved when they arrive on scene,” the statement read. “Therefore, for their safety and the safety of others, we discourage community members from confronting or attempting to detain suspects.”
