Dodge could be much closer to rejoining NASCAR’s premier Cup Series than previously expected. New reports indicate the automaker’s long-rumored comeback has gained momentum, potentially putting the brand back on the grid for the 2027 season.
If that timeline holds, Dodge would return to NASCAR’s top division for the first time since 2012. Its arrival would restore the championship to four manufacturers alongside Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota.
Earlier expectations pointed to a 2028 debut, but recent progress behind the scenes appears to have accelerated development. While nothing has been officially confirmed, multiple key milestones reportedly have been reached in recent months.
A successful return would mark another significant step in Dodge’s renewed emphasis on performance vehicles and motorsport. It would also give NASCAR fans the opportunity to once again see the iconic brand competing for Cup Series victories.
Development Reportedly Moving Ahead of Schedule
According to a report from The Athletic, Dodge has made substantial progress with the development of its next-generation Cup Series race car. The project has reportedly advanced enough that a 2027 debut is now considered a realistic possibility.
One of the biggest developments is said to be the completion of initial wind tunnel testing for the race car’s body. Engineers have also reportedly made significant progress with engine development, overcoming what had been viewed as one of the largest technical hurdles facing the program.
Despite the encouraging progress, considerable work remains before the opening race of the 2027 season. NASCAR race programs require extensive testing, validation, and manufacturer approval before they are ready to compete, meaning the accelerated timeline is still not guaranteed.
If Dodge does return next year, it would once again battle Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota in NASCAR’s highly competitive premier series after more than a decade away.
Kaulig Racing Expected To Lead The Program

Reports also suggest Kaulig Racing is positioned to become Dodge’s primary Cup Series partner. The organization already has an established relationship with Stellantis through Ram’s involvement in the NASCAR Truck Series.
Having concluded its partnership with Chevrolet, Kaulig Racing appears well placed to spearhead Dodge’s return. The existing relationship between the team and Stellantis could simplify the transition compared with launching an entirely new operation.
Current NASCAR regulations also make that approach more practical. Series officials are not expected to increase the number of Cup Series charters beyond the existing 36, meaning Dodge would likely need to compete through an established chartered organization rather than creating a new full-time entry.
That arrangement would allow the manufacturer to return more quickly while leveraging an experienced team that already understands the demands of modern NASCAR competition.
Part Of Dodge’s Performance Revival
A NASCAR comeback would fit neatly into Dodge’s broader strategy of rebuilding its performance image. The automaker has already announced plans to bring back a HEMI V8-powered Charger before the end of the decade while reportedly preparing additional high-performance models for its future lineup.
Those plans reflect a renewed focus on enthusiasts following several years of significant changes within the brand. Motorsport has historically played an important role in Dodge’s identity, making a return to NASCAR a natural extension of that strategy.
Although an official announcement has yet to be made, the latest reports suggest Dodge’s comeback may be closer than many expected. If development continues on its current path, the familiar Dodge name could once again be competing for victories in the NASCAR Cup Series as early as 2027, ending a 15-year absence from one of America’s most popular motorsport championships.
