A San Francisco police motorcycle officer walked away with relatively minor injuries after a collision with a box truck near San Francisco International Airport, but video of the crash is now sparking a debate over who was actually at fault.
The footage, shared by journalist Stanley Roberts, shows a box truck stopped at what appears to be a stop sign before waiting for a vehicle to pass from the right. After that vehicle clears, the box truck begins making a left turn into the roadway.
What happens next has viewers sharply divided. Some believe the truck pulled into the officer’s path, while others argue the truck was already well into the intersection and the officer either failed to react in time or was traveling too fast to avoid the collision.
The video quickly sparked debate among viewers. While some point to the truck driver’s citation as evidence that the commercial vehicle pulled into the officer’s path, others argue the footage raises questions about the officer’s speed and whether the collision could have been avoided.
Video Shows the Crash That Has Viewers Split
Please give the video a moment to load.
The video appears to show the box truck entering the roadway and continuing through its turn as the motorcycle officer approaches. Moments later, the motorcycle collides with the side of the truck.
After the impact, the truck’s rear wheels appear to roll over the motorcycle and rider. Roberts initially described the incident as an officer being run over by a large box truck, though many commenters focused less on the aftermath and more on what happened in the seconds leading up to the collision.
Some viewers argued the truck driver was clearly at fault for entering the roadway in front of an oncoming motorcycle. Others pointed out that the truck appears to be well into its turn and already occupying the roadway before impact.
Officer Suffered a Sprained Ankle
According to a statement from San Francisco Police Officers Association President Louis Wong, the crash occurred on June 15 when a truck pulled in front of an SFPD motorcycle officer traveling on a roadway near San Francisco International Airport.
Fortunately, the officer’s injuries were relatively minor.
The police union said the officer suffered a sprained ankle, was treated at a local hospital, and has since been released. The truck driver was cited at the scene.
“While we’re grateful the officer’s injuries were not more serious, this incident is another reminder of the hazards officers face every day while working to keep our city safe,” Wong said in the statement.
Wong also noted that the crash came just days after two San Francisco police officers were struck by a vehicle while attempting to arrest a suspect outside a Trader Joe’s in the city’s Nob Hill neighborhood.
Viewers Continue To Debate Who Was At Fault
The comment section quickly turned into a debate over right of way, reaction time, and speed.
One commenter wrote, “That video does not show a truck running over a Solo. It does show a Solo running into a truck.”
Others strongly disagreed, arguing that the truck driver entered the roadway without yielding to approaching traffic.
Several viewers questioned whether the officer may have been traveling too fast for conditions or failed to recognize that the truck was entering the roadway. Others countered that motorcycles require more stopping distance than many people realize and that the truck should never have entered the officer’s lane in the first place.
The short clip does not reveal the officer’s speed, sight lines, braking inputs, or every traffic control present at the location, making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions from the video alone.
One thing is clear: what could have been a far more serious collision ended with the officer suffering only a sprained ankle.
What do you think? Did the truck pull into the officer’s path, or does the video suggest the officer had enough time to avoid the crash?
